New Empire Hobbit Covers Revealed, Stunning New Interstellar Trailer, Poster For Tarantino's The Hateful Eight Debuts, The 10 Biggest Stories Of Comic-Con

Get 6 Issues Of Empire From Just £15!
Celebrate our anniversary with our special offer!

The latest issue of Empire - on-sale now, good people - celebrates the concluding chapter of The Hobbit with a face-off between two cover stars. In the right corner is Smaug 'Smokeypants' The Fire Drake, fresh from a long nap and ready to rumble; in the left corner, Bard 'Black 'Arras' The Bowman, Esgaroth's possible saviour. We know which one will sell better in Lake-town's WHSmith, but which will you opt for? There's a new trailer to help with that call. Our September issue cover stars (eat your scaly heart out, Vogue) are joined by a galaxy of movie movers and shakers on the pages inside. There's Jon Hamm, Marion Cotillard, Luc Besson, Liam Neeson and the redemption tale of the year, Wesley Snipes, as well as exclusive reports from Exodus, Doctor Who, Mad Max and Sin City 2. Pick it up or we're sending Orlando Bloom round.

    The 10 Biggest Stories Of Comic-Con 2014
This year's San Diego Comic-Con may have been more low key than normal in some respects - several studios skipped the big panels and there were one or two movies, Jurassic World included, that were notable by their absence - but in others it was just as crazy and packed as usual. In among the presentations to hit the cavernous Hall H and elsewhere, there were some big announcements, one or two surprises and a lot of screaming. Here are some of our favourite big stories. Now if you'll excuse us, we're off to take a collective nap to recover.

Everything You Need To Know About The Dragonriders Of Pern
News has arrived that Warner Bros., the home of Harry Potter and The Hobbit, is adding another realm of fantastic beasts to its scaly roster . The studio has snaffled the rights to the hugely popular Dragonriders Of Pern series written by Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd. There are 22 volumes in total, providing plenty of the kind of world-building and narrative raw materials it has so successfully juiced with J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien. But who are these dragonriders? And where, for that matter, is Pern? For those that aren't au fait with the property, we've answered some of the key questions surrounding what could become a major movie franchise.

A Pocket Guide To Game Of Thrones' New Cast Members
Game Of Thrones season five, which commences shooting in two shakes of a direwolf's tail and takes inspiration from the most recent two books in George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire, will offer fresh opportunities to enjoy some of our favourite actors on screen before they're inevitably torn apart by dogs, strangled with each others' gizards or incinerated by a dragon. Life expectancy in Westeros being what it is, regular batches of new recruits are needed. Class of July 2014 doesn't disappoint. Its blend of old favourites, fresh-faced up-and-comers and total newbies looks set to further enrich the byzantine schemes of the Seven Kingdoms, as Empire's cast blow-by-blow reveals...

Directors Special: Peter Hyams Goes Film-By-Film
Out on DVD and Blu-ray this week, Enemies Closer is a return to action for veteran director Peter Hyams. In an exclusive interview, Empire spoke to him about his reunion with Jean-Claude Van Damme and their original '90s collaborations on Timecop and Sudden Death. We also got him to talk us through a handful of his other classics, including Capricorn One, Outland and the controversial 2001: A Space Odyssey sequel, 2010.

Explore The Massive Avengers: Age Of Ultron Comic-Con Banner
One of the treats offered by Comic-Con was this nifty new concept art from Avengers: Age Of Ultron - made up of individually-released character posters . Like Where's Wally, only with Earth's mightiest heroes rather than a perma-tourist in a stripy jumper and a bobbly hat (although we're sure he's in there somewhere), it features franchise newcomers Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Paul Bettany's The Vision in action (top left), alongside Team Avengers. Use this Stark-approved gadget to zoom in on the panorama's many details.

Models, Inc. The Inside Story of Sideshow Collectibles
The Joker once mused, "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" For those not blessed with billions, the answer might just be Sideshow Collectibles. At least, if you're looking for great prop replicas, statuettes and figures. We decided to peek behind the curtain at the company's facility to see how the likes of Batman, Superman and Luke Skywalker become collectible figures...

Classic Scene: Play It Again Sam
Neurotic film critic Allan (Woody Allen), in love with his friend Dick's wife, Linda (Diane Keaton), and heeding the advice of an imaginary Humphrey Bogart, follows them to the airport where Linda tells him she still loves her husband...

How Much Is a Pint Of Milk: Dan Akroyd
He was on a mission from God in The Blues Brothers. He snagged spectres in Ghostbusters. But does fast-talkin' Dan Aykroyd pony up for his pasteurized?

Screen To Stage: Shakespeare In Love
Putting Shakespeare In Love onstage feels like a no-brainer. It's a film that often sounds like a play, with all those throwaway Shakespearean lines surrounding the actually Shakespearean lines, and of course it's a film about putting on a play. It's a film that has a lot to say about the importance and strength of drama, and the vital necessity of having a bit with a dog. And in fact here the truth of Henslowe's maxim that "comedy, love and a bit with a dog; that's what they want" is amply demonstrated. The stage show delivers all three in spades, and judged purely on its own considerable merits it succeeds. The only problem is that it proves hard to outdo the film, so people familiar with the original may find this a little less satisfying than those who come to it fresh.

    Guardians Of The Galaxy

Colourful, tongue-in-cheek fun, purpose-built for grown-up lovers of kitsch '80s science-fiction. But the Marvel formula is starting to feel, well, a little too formulaic.

    Noah

Inventive, ambitious, brutal and beautiful: a potent mythological epic. But also wilfully challenging, as likely to infuriate as inspire, whether through its unmitigated Old Testament harshness or its eco-message revisionism. If only more blockbusters were like this.

    Also Out

The Quiller Memorandum Like an American Harry Palmer, played by George Segal.
Victim A strong, unusual blackmail thriller.
The Ipcress File Caine is Harry Palmer - Len Deighton's anti-Bond.
Jules Et Jim One of Truffaut's best-known, best-loved films.
    Unforgiven East meets West(ern).
