This Week...
With Christmas jumpers on, chestnuts roasting on the office brazier (note to HR: we don't have an office brazier) and the boss back home recreating the nativity in the medium of gingerbread, us remaining Empire elfs have been beavering away in our tiny chairs. Lucky us, because this week our true love - that'd be movies - brought us new trailers for The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, The Hobbit and Wrath Of The Titans: Titans Will Wrath. We've broken them down and wrapped them up again, all for your viewing pleasure. Now all we need is two turtle doves and we can go home. Where's John Woo when you need him? Merry Christmas one and all!

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Arrives
Christmas has come early in the caped form of The Dark Knight Rises trailer. If anything it's a little more understated than we were expecting, but no less awesome for it. Here's a movie franchise that knows what it's about and doesn't need to bang the drum too hard to get us seriously excited. Click to watch it in full.

    The Hobbit Trailer Is Here!
Crikey: where to start? Well, first we've got Ian Holm as Bilbo, revealing in voice-over that he may not have told Frodo quite the entire story of his previous adventures. Then we cut to earlier times, and the days when Holm was Martin Freeman, whereupon Ian McKellen's Gandalf invites him on a quest and introduces the baker's dozen dwarves (a quick shot for each) that'll be sharing the adventure.

    Prometheus Trailer Arrives Online
Clearly hugely inspired by the original trailer for Sir Ridley's original Alien (love the title slowly appearing on screen and the eerie shrieks on the soundtrack), it contains our first (moving) glimpses of Scott's summer blockbuster, which seems to be on an entirely different scale to Alien, while providing some refreshingly familiar imagery.

  • A Limited Edition Dark Knight Rises Nokia Lumia 800. Created to celebrate Warner Bros and Nokia's tie-in over the film, it comes with engraved bat logo, Bane wallpaper and a Batman app that sends through all Dark Knight updates in a timely fashion. We're still looking for the button that goes straight through to Commissioner Gordon, though.

Every Franchise Would Be Better With The Rock
We saw the first trailer for GI Joe 2: Retaliation, and it looks like it's another case where The Rock, added to an existing but slightly limp franchise, reinvigorates said franchise and makes us all love it again. He already did it with The monumental (emphasis on "mental") Fast Five, and now he's doing the double. But which other franchises could benefit from the unique input of the Team Bring It captain? We consider a few options.

    Empire's Top 20 Films Of 2011
About a month ago, Empire's writers and contributors were given their most difficult task of the year: to choose their top films of 2011. How to measure up the likes of Fast Five against, say, The King's Speech? How to remember whether True Grit qualified as this year or last year? But we finally pulled it together, forced ourselves to focus and came up with this, a testament to the very best films of 2011. Read on, see what you think....

    Empire's Music Playlist Of 2011
It's been a heck of year for music and the movies. There's been terrific soundtracks (Drive, Hanna, Arrietty), earlobe-tickling TV scores (Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad), and then, just when it couldn't get a whole lot better, David Lynch weighed in with a debut studio album that turned the Empire office hi-fi into a deer. Happy times. To celebrate we shook our iPods until this playlist for 2011 fell out.

    The Hobbit Teaser Trailer Breakdown
An entire year before we get the finished version of An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson treats us to a rich taste of what he has been doing this past year. From the familiar bucolic harmony of The Shire through Trollshaws, Rivendell, The Misty Mountains, and the vestiges of Mirkwood, we are right back in that world. A Middle-earth both instantly familiar and comforting, and alluringly new.

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Breakdown
As Bane makes his entrance with the six-minute prologue released in IMAX cinemas today, Warner Bros reveals much more of Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie — the one in which, we're told ominously, "The Legend Ends" — in the first full trailer. The overriding theme is one of doom — for Gotham, and for Bruce Wayne himself, after a period of "peace" following Joker's brief reign of terror in The Dark Knight. Both Gotham and Batman are gonna get hit hard, it appears, in a 130-second taster packed with tantalising clues...

    Prometheus Trailer Breakdown
There are some questions to which man may never know the answer. Just what does The Colonel put on those sweet, sweet mini fillets? Who the hell is Mark Cavendish? And what in the name of Sam Hill is Ridley Scott's Prometheus about? Thankfully, after the release of the first teaser for Sir Ridley's sci-fi extravaganza, we're a little closer to knowing the answer to the latter question. Here is our trailer breakdown, armed with - hopefully - enough knowledge to set you straight on one of the most exciting movies of 2012.

The 24 Best Xmas Movie Characters
We've talked before about the Greatest Christmas Movies Ever and we've had our readers mash up Christmas posters but now we want to focus in a little more closely. Who are the best characters in all these seasonal films? What personalities stand out when the Christmas presents are down? Here, for our money, are the contenders...

    Sir David Attenborough Talks Penguins
At the age of 85, you might be expecting Sir David Attenborough to swap his well-worn wellies for a pair of slippers. Yet the legendary nature documentarian has never been busier. Now he's wrapped on the BBC's Frozen Planet and Sky's penguin-centric companion piece The Bachelor King 3D, he has two more Sky 3D series in development, one of which will involve a trip to the Galapagos Islands next year. Empire sat down with him in a London hotel to talk The Bachelor King, his legacy and what he'd like to see in Avatar 2...

Jameson Empire Awards 2012: Vote Now!
It's the most irreverent awards night on the celluloid calendar - and we need you to help decide the winners. The choice is yours - and we don't envy you the task, for it's been a hell of a year. The competition is open to any film that was released between January 22, 2011 and January 20, 2012, which means that the late-blooming likes of Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, Steve McQueen's Shame and Steven Spielberg's War Horse are all in contention.

    Done in 60 Seconds Competition
The 2012 Jameson Empire Awards Done in 60 Seconds has arrived! To take part in this year's competition and be in with a chance of winning a Jameson Empire Award and attending the star-studded and glittering Jameson Empire Awards ceremony in March 2012, grab some mates and blag a camera from somewhere and get shooting. To 60 seconds and not beyond!

    Promotion: The Last Cinema
The Last Cinema was written and directed by recent National Film and Television School graduate Jae-ha Myung and his producer, Andrew Start was commissioned by the Film Distributors' Association to help fight piracy. Imagining a devastated near-future world in which unchecked piracy has brought about the end of cinema. The horror! Narrated by the rather distinguished John Hurt it invites you, the filmgoing massive, not to turn a blind eye to film theft. Unless it's Hudson Hawk, in which case you're fine to turn as many blind eyes as you like.

"The Sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is the trickiest tongue-twister in the English language - presumably with Martha Marcy May Marlene in second. Key lesson? Don't become a vet in Saudi Arabia.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

A tough, post-punk Tintin-meets-Klute for the Occupy Wall Street set, this kinetic, hard-edged thriller is the perfect festive comedown for Fincher fans and dysfunctional families everywhere.
