Critics Consensus: True Grit Is Certified Fresh

Happy holidays from RT! This week at the movies, we've got frontier justice (True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld), family awkwardness (Little Fockers, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro), and a fantastic voyage (Gulliver's Travels, starring Jack Black and Amanda Peet). What do the critics have to say?

This Week...
Well, we've made it through another year. This is the last Empire newsletter of 2010, the week before Christmas, and we'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and equally Merry New Year. Whether you're a die-hard Die Hard fan or an Elf lover, may your Christmas holidays be full of good movies and bereft of bad ones, and may 2011 be full of Inception-level successes and no Last Airbender-level flops. But if you still have a last few days of work to navigate before you're officially allowed to up sticks and eat mince pies, make the time go faster with our exclusive Tron features, some Burlesque interviews or our ongoing, multi-part review of 2010. Well, you're not realistically going to do any work at this stage, are you?

Inside The Issue
Tron Legacy: The Ultimate Guide It's almost upon us, but there's still lots to tell about Tron Legacy, and we have the full story. There are three rather spiffing covers to choose from (pick Jeff Bridges' Flynn, Garret Hedlund's Sam Flynn or Olivia Wilde's Quorra) and then everything that you might want to know about the film inside.

Oscars Special! True Grit, Johnny Depp, Black Swan, Annette Bening, The King's Speech, Angelina Jolie...

    Golden Globes: WTF?
The Golden Globes nominations for 2011 were announced this morning, and the immediate reaction was to wonder what the frak are they putting in the drinking water over there in LA? Whatever Kool-Aid the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been drinking, it's clearly driven them completely mad. Here are just a few of our initial problems with the list.

Video Interviews: The Cast And Crew Of Tron Legacy
When the cast and crew of Tron Legacy came in to London to talk about the film, we interrogated them all to get the lowdown on the sequel to the groundbreaking Tron. So click below to hear from star Jeff Bridges, director Joe Kosinski, designer Daniel Simon and female lead Olivia Wilde, on returning to a world left behind nearly 30 years ago and making it look awesome...

    The Best Trailers Of 2010
More often than not, a good movie is accompanied by a good trailer, and as the hype machines gear up for each and every release, the brief teasers of footage can be almost as exciting as the films themselves for die-hard cinema buffs. In some cases, they're better than the film, which turns out to be 90 minutes too long. So as good ol' 2010 draws to a close, we took a look at the past twelve months' trailers, both for movies gone and yet to be released, and evaluate them in the only way we know how: somewhat sarcastically.

Video Interviews: The Director And Cast On Burlesque
Burlesque is an over-the-top, Swarovski-studded, finger-snapping ride of a film. Ali (Christina Aguilera), a small time gal with a bloody big voice, dreams of living the high-life and moves to LA with dreams of making it big. Cue The Burlesque Lounge. Run by Tess (Cher) the club is packed with paying customers, opulent furnishings, a big band and, of course, stunning Burlesque dancers in outrageous outfits. We were lucky enough to have a natter with director, Steven Antin, as well as love interest Jack (Gigandet) and bitchy burlesque dancer Nikki (Bell) when they were in town last week. Here's their take on the story...

    Video: Peter Weir At BAFTA
Last week we had the privilege of attending BAFTA's David Lean Lecture, this year delivered by Australian cinematic treasure Peter Weir (although he preferred not to call it a lecture; just a 'talk'), and it was every bit as brilliant as we'd hoped. After entertaining the capacity crowd with stories spanning his forty- year-plus career as a director, and an all-too-brief conversation with host Mark Kermode, questions were taken from the floor. For your filmmaking education and viewing pleasure, we've managed to secure a couple of clips from the evening.

Ten Movie Locations We'd Like To Move To
Moviemakers have hauled their cameras to some far off places this year. There's been the icy tundra of Siberia (The Way Back), the vast immensity of Russia's heartland (The Last Station) and the broken-down desolation of middle America (The Road, Winter's Bone). But phoey if we want to visit those places right now – too cold and not nearly fun enough. What caught our eye in this year's travel guide were the sandier, warmer climes, where you relax safe in the knowledge that you're not about to be eaten by cannibals or set upon by wolves. Okay, so there are one or two exceptions...

    2010's Trends Of The Year
Every year there are certain events and trends that crop up over and over again in movies, and 2010 was no exception. Here are the motifs that we noticed in this year's films – which of them did you spot?

How Much Is A Pint Of Milk?
It's all too easy for Hollywood stars to lose all touch with reality, to find themselves alienated from the masses and surrounded by assistants taking care of their every need. To assess how bad it's become for them, we've taken to quizzing Hollywood's finest on the price of a humble pint of milk, to see if they're still men or women of the people, and we've thrown in a few other questions from off the beaten path for good measure. Here are this year's replies...

Olly Moss: 2010's Alternative Movie Posters
Magazine readers will know that we hooked up with designer Olly Moss earlier this year to provide us with a unique monthly reinterpretation of posters for upcoming movies. Here is the result of his efforts to date, covering movies from Sex and the City and The Social Network to Wolfman and Harry Potter. Feast your eyes here...

    Tron: The Beginner's Guide
It's seen more often as a pop culture touchstone or a geeky reference than a shining example of filmmaking these days, but without Steven Lisberger's Tron, the filmmaking landscape would look quite different – and of course sequel Tron Legacy, out this week, would not exist. But many people remember the original only from Bank Holiday telly or having watched the VHS version years ago. With Legacy arriving this week, we thought we'd turn back the CPU clock to take a closer look at it as a catch-up for anyone who doesn't know an identity disk from a recogniser, and whose first experience with the Grid might have been via the trailers for Legacy…

A plethora of pizzas from the lovely folk at Dominos to line Empire's stomachs before the Christmas do. Fun fact: these were ALL gone .25 seconds after this photo was taken. Oh, if you fancy wining some pizza of your own why don't you give Domino's The Great Turkey Escape game a go!

    The Expendables

More The Wild Geese than The Wild Bunch, The Expendables is not a wasted opportunity, but more one not fully exploited. For action fans raised on Commando and Cobra, the ensemble cast and '80s-style violence will be pure wish-fulfilment — but even they could have wished for something better.
