This Week...

As September looms ever closer, brandishing darkening mornings and back-to-school adverts, comfort yourself with the knowledge that there are treats in store as the weather worsens. The new issue of Empire brings with it the Winter Preview, giving you a sneak peek at the films and TV shows headed your way over the colder months, led by James Bond in Skyfall, The Hobbit, Jack Reacher and the rest. We also have a look at Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, the new season of Doctor Who (including some lovely pics we shot of Matt Smith ) and a whole lot more. It's enough to make you shout, "Forget sunshine; bring on the frost!", frankly. So if anyone needs us, we'll be over here mulling things and wearing woollens.

Venice 2012: The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Iceman and Bait
After Black Swan and The Ides Of March, Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist seemed like an odd choice to start the 69th Venice Film Festival. There's still some Hollywood star wattage there, with supporting turns from Liev Schreiber, Kate Hudson and Keifer Sutherland, but here they are pressed into the service of a provocative political drama that questions the validity of the American dream to outsiders. In short, it is a pro-America film that dares voice un-American thoughts, and though it is perhaps overlong and certainly uneven at times, there's a lot to think about here.

    Total Recall: The Interviews
If I'm not me, who am I? That's the question at the heart of this year's Total Recall re-do, with Colin Farrell stepping into the huge shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston. Our James White talked to them all recently in LA to get the lowdown on slipping a little Arnie in, going all the way back and heading back to the future. Be warned: Contains casual swearing. We give you three guesses which Irish cast member is most responsible.

What If Films Had Kept Their Working Titles?
Some films adopt a working or production title to keep inquisitive members of the public and press away during filming. Others simply haven't quite decided on a name when production begins. Whatever the reason, it's pretty common for very big films to shoot under an alias, which may be used right up until the cans of completed film are delivered to cinemas. Here, we've collected a few of the best and re-imagined their posters accordingly. Watch as Captain America sadly considered his frostbitten fingers, just imagine if Rory's First Kiss had really gone by that title, and contemplate the injustice of calling Keanu Reeves "burly"...

10 Films To See Before Pacific Rim
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim sees the Earth under attack from extra-dimensional monsters capable of crushing cities with the swish of a tentacle. It's an original story, but one that's rooted in the traditional of Japan's "kaiju" movies, the giant monster mashes that followed in Godzilla's wake and - for the most part - from the same legendary Toho Studios. So here, ahead of Del Toro's effort, are the films you should see to brush up on the genre...

22 Must Watch Movies From The Toronto Film Festival
The Toronto International Film Festival has rapidly established itself as one of the best on the planet. The perfect mix of big names, arthouse fare and no-holds-barred weirdness, against the backdrop of one of our favourite cities, the TIFF - as acronym fans like to call it - is a highlight of the festival calendar. Here, we take a look at a bunch of movies that should be lighting up Scott Pilgrim's hometown from September 6 onwards.

The 14 Weirdest Dreams In Hollywood
From Robert Downey Jr.'s Tesla-coil skyscrapers to Kate Winslet's baby-eating hamsters, Empire reveals what really boils in those creative subconsciouses, while dream expert Kelly Bulkeley PhD provides analysis - without us telling him who's enjoying the in-sleep entertainment...

A real Dibbuk box to tie in with The Posession (out today), made by hand, carved in Hebrew and containing real human hair, a dead locust, old coins and a bottle of wine we're scared to drink in case it really is demonically cursed. HOLD US WE'RE FRIGHTENED.

The word "cephalopod", describing squids and such, comes from the Greek for "head feet".

Comedian Sarah Millican's cat is called Chief Brody.

Brazil is Paul "Orbital" Hartnoll's favourite film ever.

Plants Vs Zombies was originally going to be called Lawn Of The Dead.

The correct term for Tom Hardy's knitwear in Lawless is a "hardigan".

Hobbit Feetses anyone? Talk about a dickhead. Exciteable boxer dog. Keifer Sutherland likes cupcakes.

    Total Recall

Perhaps no more absurd than the Verhoeven version, but certainly less amusing. Farrell and Beckinsale emerge unscathed, but the endless scrabbling for novelty and reinvention leaves this feeling unaccountably stale and familiar.

    Rumble Fish

A bit too over-stylized to allow for any great involvement, the most interesting part of this is spotting the young actors before they became stars - most notably nephew-of-the-director Nicolas Cage.
