Critics Consensus: The Social Network Is One Of The Year's Best

This week at the movies, we've got Internet pioneers (The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake), a juvenile vampire (Let Me In, starring Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee), and a dangerous family (Case 39, starring Renee Zellweger and Ian McShane). What do the critics have to say?

This Week...
It may look a lot like autumn out there, but fear not! Not only does this week see the release of a raft of good new movies, but we're here to brighten your day with the Greatest Movie Trilogies Ever. You voted in your tens of thousands, and we've profiled the top 33 most-popular trilogies for your perusal. Yes, The Matrix is in there. Yes, it's arguable how you define a Hannibal Lecter trilogy. And yes, more of you voted for Mighty Ducks than Ingmar Bergman's Faith trilogy. Dearie dear. As well as that, we've profiled the tumultuous career of Ben Affleck as his new directorial effort, The Town, is released, and brought you the latest on filmmakers from Bobcat Goldthwaite to Gaspar Noe. So sigh no more about the rain; just enjoy the eternal sunshine of arguing about whether Die Hard's even a trilogy anyway…

New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer Online
We're treated to our first proper look at Bill Nighy as Rufus Scrimgeour, whose dialogue frames the first part of this new footage. Plenty of things go boom, there are the amped up dramatic confrontation as Harry's friendship with Ron and Hermione really gets put to the test, and of course, Voldemort's forces gather for a massive final attack against both the good guys and us muggles caught in between.

    Who's Your Favourite Narrator?
This week sees the release of The Wildest Dream, about climber George Mallory's 1924 attempt to conquer Everest. The documentary uses a combination of original sources, reconstructed and modern climbing footage and lots of fabulous actors reading from old letters (including Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Dancy and a last performance from the late Natasha Richardson), all tied together with the sonorous, peat-smoked tones of Liam Neeson*. And it got me thinking about the importance of finding the right narrator for such things.

    The 33 Greatest Movie Trilogies
We asked you to vote for your favourite all-time movie trilogies, and you answered in your thousands. Some of you plumped for pure three-somes, untinged by inconvenient further sequels; others specified which three films in a series you meant - and, where there's a coherent narrative to back you up, we've allowed it. So here, without further ado, are the greatest film trios for your enjoyment...

10 Horror Movies For Kids (Big And Small)
Joe Dante, the man who unleashed two small armies of snarly Gremlins on our childhoods, is back with another wee'un-worrying slice of family horror, The Hole 3D. It's a scary return to form for the one-time acolyte of Roger Corman, another man who knew a thing or two about getting the maximum fang for his buck (check out Little Shop Of Horrors for proof). It's inspired us to mull over the movies that scared the little life out of us in our formative years, and pick a few that you can show your kids without leaving them traumatised and you dealing with Social Services. And in case you're wondering, Hannah Montana didn't make the list. Some things are just too scary.

    Ben Affleck: A Movie-By-Movie Guide
As a wise man once sang, "Life is a rollercoaster", and no-one in Hollywood better exemplifies that than Ben Affleck, a man who's experienced enough highs and lows to keep him going several lifetimes. With heist thriller The Town taking him back to his old Boston stamping ground, we've run a forensic eye over those moments of glorious triumph and incredible career catastrophe. Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy ride…

Video: Gaspar NoƩ On Enter The Void
Genius or lunatic, cinematic revolutionary or empty provocateur, Gaspar NoƩ's movies have always polarised audiences. His fourth feature, Enter The Void, will also divide audiences. A psychedelic tour de force inspired in part by 2001: A Space Odyssey, it leaves an imprint that's impossible to shake. As he told us when we tracked him down, NoƩ is unphased by le hullabaloo. After all, this is a man who was he was heckled by the family of his own cast when IrrƩversible screened in Cannes...

How To Be An Inspirational Teacher, The Movie Way
This week sees the release World's Greatest Dad, a dark, twisted comedy from Bobcat Goldthwaite. It stars Robin Williams as schoolteacher Lance Clayton, which inevitably made us think of Williams' other great teaching role in Dead Poets' Society, where he's far from your average Mr. Jenkins of 4B. So to celebrate unconventional yet inspiring teachers, here are 12 of our favourite classroom-based madcap professors, hell-bent on getting some knowledge into that stubborn noggin of yours…

Who Or What Is Bobcat Goldthwaite?
Bobcat Goldthwaite is not your average film director, and he doesn't produce average films. Whether it's about alcoholic clowns, 'wanking accidents', or performing oral sex on a dog, Bobcat refuses to be in anyway boring. With the release of the dark and bizarre World's Greatest Dad, starring his old pal Robin Williams, we thought we'd look back on the comedy legend's past, from actor to director, stand-up to occasional arsonist. Intrigued? We thought you might be…

    The Town

The Town is that rare beast, a grown-up genre flick, chock-full of compelling character dynamics and a clutch of pitch-perfect performances. It also proves that Gone Baby Gone was no fluke, and confirms Ben Affleck (yes, Ben Affleck) as a major director in the making.
