This Week...
Another month has passed and that can only mean one thing: it's time for the new issue of Empire magazine. And this one's a doozy. We start off dark and sinister with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, lighten things up a bit with The Adventures Of Tintin, and then sit down for a natter with Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton and Roland Emmerich. We also have the director of The Wicker Man telling his story in his own words, and our Nick investigating what went wrong with The Last Action Hero, the biggest Arnie film ever to fizzle at the box office. So pick up a copy – apart from the great content, it'll come in handy as a sunshade in the glorious weather this weekend.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Trailer
Based on Jonathan Safran Foer's sophomore novel (following Everything Is Illuminated, which was filmed by Liev Schriber in 2005), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is the story of Oskar, whose father is killed in the Twin Tower attacks. Oskar believes his father left him the message in the form of a key, sparking a New York-based quest to find the lock that it fits.

Supernatural Vs. The Vampire Diaries: Battle of the Buffy Successors
As our forumites will know, I've been into Supernatural for some time now. And just recently, I've been attempting to get into The Vampire Diaries as well. What I've discovered are two very different contenders to Buffy's throne, so let's discuss their similarities, their differences, their strengths and weaknesses, shall we? Before we start: I'm deliberately not counting True Blood here because it's openly aimed at a different, older, less geeky demographic, nor am I considering the cancelled likes of Moonlight, Blood Ties or whatever. This is about ostensibly-at-least teen-friendly shows wherein improbably good-looking folk encounter supernatural creatures.

    Kevin Smith Talks Red State
A few years back, Kevin Smith gave Q&As to his legions of adoring fans in London's Prince Charles Cinema, off Leicester Square. So it made sense that when he was in town this month to talk about his latest (and possibly last ever) movie, Red State, we should have a chat with him there. Whilst sitting in the famous shiny red seats, we got to talking about what genre Red State is actually in, "memory foods", why he can't direct a Quentin Tarantino movie (turns out he's not Quentin Tarantino), his very favourite Twitterer EVER, and what is Silent Bob's best sandwich of all time. You'll want to hear the answer to that one, we promise you - jump to around 5.10 if you don't believe us...

    Melancholia Interview: Kirsten Dunst
It's a film about a wedding, a breakdown - and the end of the world. It's another Lars Von Trier effort that has drawn controversy and praise in equal measure, and huge acclaim for his lead actress, Kirsten Dunst. It's a difficult film to explain (and, at times, to watch) but one that you'll be glad you've seen by the end. We sat down with Kirsten Dunst in London recently to learn a little more about the experience that is Melancholia...

    Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro Interview
With the delays that ended his involvement in The Hobbit and the consignment of At The Mountain Of Madness into the purgatory of turn-around, you'd forgive Guillermo del Toro for feeling a little exasperated with life. In fact, you'd probably turn a blind eye if he choose to launch a frustrated boot in the direction of the nearest hell-beast. Not a bit of it. When Empire caught up with the Mexican maestro he was every bit his usual, ebullient self, sharing the latest on his current project, monster mash Pacific Rim, and chatting passionately about his work on Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, Julia's Eyes and a freshly spruced director's cut of Mimic. Oh, and he's also written another novel. Question is, when does he sleep? Turns out he doesn't...

    Jessica Chastain On The Debt
Timing can be strange. When John Madden's post-Holocaust thriller The Debt was mooted for release, his lead actor, Jessica Chastain, was still unknown - as the director intended - and Cold War dramas were rarer than a lottery win for Haley's Comet. Then, thanks to the bankruptcy of Miramax, it was stuck in Hollywood carbonite and shunted back. Fast forward a year and there's barely a bus unadorned by Jessica Chastain's visage, while Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - with which The Debt shares a screenwriter - has just put the Berlin Wall back onto our screens. Not exactly what Madden intended. Still, as he explained when Empire caught up with him, hardly cause for despair. He was joined by two of his cast members - actress-of-the-moment Chastain, and Tom Wilkinson - to talk through the nitty-gritty of their Mossad movie.

    Unholy Holy Men
With Red State coming out this week, wherein the strongest scenes feature Michael Parks' fundamentalist (emphasis on "mentalist") Abin Cooper, we thought that now might be a good time to look back at some holy men who are less than shiny examples of goodness, charity and the rest of the virtues. Hold on to your hymnals, people , because these are some bad bishops, prattish priests and vile vicars...

Anna Faris & Chris Evans Talk What's Your Number?
Is it just us, or are rom-coms getting a bit raunchier? That's certainly true of What's Your Number?, the new comedy starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans. She's a girl worried that she's mislaid Mr Right somewhere among her many exes; he's the hunky-but-philandering neighbour who helps her track them all down and see if she can find him. Our James White talked to both in LA recently, to find out a little more about their take on love...

    The Ultimate Sunglasses Picture Quiz
Last week we brought you The Ultimate Glasses Picture Quiz. This week, it's sunnies. Makes sense, really. After all, sunglasses have been a cinematic byword for "absurdly cool" for decades now, so there are literally dozens of iconic Ray-Bans, Oakleys and other UV-protecting pieces of eyewear to pick from. Trust us, whittling the longlist down to just 45 was a challenge. Still, what are you doing reading the intro for? Go forth and quiz! Go on! Quiz now!

    Paddy Considine Webchat
He's been one of our favourite actors for ages, thanks to great performances in everything from Dead Man's Shoes to The Bourne Ultimatum to A Room For Romeo Brass. But now Paddy Considine has turned to directing, with his debut Tyrannosaur starring Peter Mullan and Olivia Coleman. Ahead of its UK release on October 7, we put the director through that most terrifying of ordeals: your questions...

    Promotion: 10 Great Movie Prequels
The Affair is Lee Child's 16th Jack Reacher novel - and the most exciting yet. Turning back the clock to six months before Killing Floor (the original Reacher novel) kicks off, it sees our man Jack still a major in the military police, sent undercover to investigate a murder of a woman in bar in Carter Crossing, Mississippi. To celebrate The Affair's release, we've put together 10 of the very best origins stories from cinema's long and varied history... and what do you know? We've got it here for you.

Jimmy Fallon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt do a mean Bowie & Axl Rose at karaoke.

Kirsten Dunst plans on going to see the Bring It On musical in LA when that opens, but she won't be appearing in it.

Paddy Considine calls bread rolls "cobs".

A Mexican ten peso coin looks a lot like a two-pound coin. Examine your change more carefully than I did!

Arthur Christmas screening invites have arrived. Time to start hanging tinsel!

The most gorgeously geeky fingernails ever. Potter meets A Game Of Thrones. What a real Smurf might look like. We hope Dark Knight Rises has a scene like this.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to me.

Nick de Semlyen brought us back these awesome Lord of the Rings Pez dispensers from LA. Now there are going to be fights about who gets what.

    Melancholia

Von Trier is a burr under the hide for many viewers, and the unconverted won't be convinced. But it's audacious, beautiful, tactful filmmaking and perhaps the perfect match for The Tree Of Life on a bipolar double bill.

    Also Out
