| Awards Weekend Is Upon Us It's the busiest time of the year for everyone here at Empire as we gear up for the 2010 Jameson Empire Awards taking place in London on Sunday night. It's the one time of the year when we get a night off from being hard-hitting film critics, instead stepping over the red rope to see things from a publicist's point of view. For one night only it's all about chaperoning celebrities, seeing to their every whim and making sure no other journalists piss them off by asking awkward questions. It's every bit as surreal as it sounds. But beyond all that the Awards are just a whole lot of fun. Informal, irreverent and slightly mental – much like the people at Empire – the Awards are a night for everyone to let their hair down. We'll have all the coverage (news, gossip, videos and photos) up on the site once we've crawled back from the after show party in the wee hours of Monday morning so be sure to log on and get the full scoop. | | | | | Which Sports Work Best On Film? Last Saturday night I attended my first roller derby, which turns out to be the world's best spectator sport. It's fast, it's furious, there are no faffy times out (apart from a nice 15 minute half-time break), pretty much no breaks in play and lots and lots of speed and violence and tactics to discuss*. By about 10 minutes in, the entire party of first-timers I was with were discussing strategy and scoring and so-and-so's speed like old hands at this stuff. It was, in other words, every bit as entertaining as the movie Whip It**, about the same sport, which got me wondering why some sports work better on film than others. Read more. | | | |

It's based on Mark Millar's comic book and does exactly what it says on the tin. We sent our very own superhero, aka Vidiblogisode Man, to the Kick-Ass set to do battle with cast and crew. With questions. About the film. | | |
