| This Week... This week sees the release of one of the year's funniest films in Bridesmaids, starring (and written by) the wonderful Kristen Wiig. We have quite a crush / girl-crush (delete as applicable) on her here at Empire, and you can see why in our video interviews with the cast, which are now online. Frankly, we couldn't love her more if she were an adorable Labrador puppy wearing a bowtie (and they actually had some such puppies at screenings for the film, in a stroke of PR genius). And following on from our Bridesmaids webchat with director Paul Feig and co-star Chris O'Dowd a couple of weeks back, we're very excited that David Schwimmer is visiting on Monday at 2pm to talk about his new film as a director, Trust. Make sure to get your teeth whitened, your leather trousers on and your dated Friends references ready before then! Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

| | | | | Which Films Should You Watch On A Plane? As I write this, I'm sitting in a departure lounge waiting to board a transatlantic flight and, as ever, my mind has turned to the thorny question of what to watch onboard. It seems to me that there are some particular rules that apply to movies on planes, and I wanted to share them here. | | | |

| | | | | Bridesmaids Video Interviews In case you didn't know already, Bridesmaids is one of the comedies of the year so far. Much more than just a 'Hangover for women', as it's been billed in some corners, Kristen Wiig and Paul Feig has assembled one of the funniest ensemble casts for many moons. Empire was luck enough to reassemble them in London to quiz them about everything from a dream British SNL cast to Yorkie bar wrapper collections, via cookery, back-seat directing and plans for taking Bridesmaids into space in a sequel. We don't think the last one is going to happen. | | |
| | | The Most Awesome Training Montages In Cinema History Renowned writer and all-round brainiac Malcolm Gladwell argues that mastery of any field takes 10,000 hours of solid graft. Without a serious commitment of time and energy even basic competence is impossible, let alone Dodgeball championships, bobsled gold medals or the chance to knock seven bells out of oversized Russkies with flat tops. But Hollywood has the ultimate Gladwell-defying shortcut. Malcolm, we give you the montage. In a mere minute or two of running up steps, punching coconuts and tying yourself to trees, great things can happen. Here's a few of our favourite examples. Prepare to punch the air. |
| | | Make Mine Muppets: Your Guide To The Muppet Movies Forget lights, camera, action. It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights! Yes, with a new Muppet movie on the way to us next year and the full proper trailer finally arriving, we thought we'd take a quick look back at Kermit and the fuzzy faction's history in the cinema. While we'll always love the Muppets, not all of their films are winners... |
| | | Denis Villeneuve On Incendies A thriller-stroke-whodunnit that will burn into your mind, Incendies is a twisty-turny adaptation of a stage play that carries two siblings into their dead mother's dark past. It's the work of Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, a man who, on this evidence, has a big future on both side of the border. It's not always easy to watch - hey, the movie charts Lebanon's seriously violent past - but it's never less than compelling. "The story is quite violent," Villeneuve explained when Empire met him. "I removed some of the violence but I tried to portray it as ugly as possible." He talked to us about tackling the tough material, the film's reception in the Middle East and the powerful influence of Stanley Kubrick. |
| | | The Worst Boyfriends In Cinema This week, Bridesmaids brings us a stellar example of a dodgy movie bloke, with Jon Hamm's preening, self-obsessed sex buddy who generally makes Kristen Wiig's life a misery when he isn't trying to get her to perform some outrageous erotic act. Which got us thinking about the feckless, useless, and sometimes downright dangerous bad boyfriends burped up by the movies. The message to women being thus: some of this lot may seem attractive, but they're all trouble... |
| | | Akira: The Story Behind The Film In 1988, Katsuhiro Ôtomo turned his bestselling manga into a $10 million feature-length cartoon. The result, Akira, is quite simply one of the greatest animated movies ever made. With its release in Neo-Tokyo-enhancing Blu-ray, Empire talks to Ôtomo and traces the making of the cartoon classic that helped shape the modern blockbuster... |
| | | Lucy Walker On Countdown To Zero Let's face it, we all love watching things go 'kaboom' on the big screen, but the idea of a real-life Judgment Day? Not so much. The spectrum of nuclear catastrophe is the topic of Oscar nominee Lucy Walker's latest documentary and it's one she's tackled with forensic detail, unearthing some truly scary tales along the way. It may not sound like popcorn viewing but, as Walker explains, it's an insight into an issue that's vital to all of us. She takes us down the rabbit hole into a world of nuclear codes, uranium smuggling and nuclear terrorism. Countdown To Zero is premiering on June 21 on 'Demand Zero Day'. |
| | | Pint Of Milk: Danny Dyer Canning Town's artful dodger, Danny Dyer is not exactly famous for his carefully weighing his words before launching them at the universe. Who better then to strap into Empire's Pint of Milk chair and launch random questions at? Here are the man's thoughts on everything from Twitter and tattoos to Kermode and cow juice... |
| | | Paul Feig And Chris O'Dowd Webchat Transcript Succinctly put, Bridesmaids is an R-Rated comedy about a group of women who go on the hen do to end all hen dos. Starring Kirsten Wiig, Chris O'Dowd, Jon Hamm, Rose Byrne and more, it's directed by none other than Freaks And Geeks creator Paul Feig, which, naturally, makes the resulting film very bloody funny. So when Mr. O'Dowd and Mr. Feig said they were in town and available for a webchat, we jumped at the chance, and here is the result. Warning: contains brief descriptions of Jon Hamm going to the loo. Honestly, it really does. |
