Batman V Superman Shifts Release Date, New Terminator Film Title Confirmed, Captain America 3 News, Guardians Of The Galaxy Playlist

Get 6 Issues Of Empire From Just £15!
Celebrate our anniversary with our special offer!

Inspired by this week's news of shifting release dates and studios staking claims to dates as far off as 2020, we have decided that this week's newsletter will move back to May, 2017 and we will be following that with a spin-off in 2019 before next week's newsletter finally debuts in 2021. A prequel to this week will be available next week instead, but we're definitely not moving to avoid conflict with other newsletters in your inbox. It's purely because we need more time to get the effects right. In any case, we hope you enjoy the many fun-filled features on the site this week, from a listen to the Guardians Of The Galaxy soundtrack to a run through the best dual-wielding swordspersons in cinema history.

A good day for fans, a bad day for spelling.

The Russo Brothers Talk Captain America 3
They're bringing some new elements to the table...

First Trailer For Stephen Hawking Film The Theory Of Everything
Though he has appeared on a number of TV shows himself - The Simpsons and Futurama to name but two - and is the subject of any number of books, Professor Stephen Hawking's life is only just arriving on the big screen. The first trailer for The Theory Of Everything has arrived online, and it certainly looks promising.

Is it a spoiler to say 'doomed Anne Boleyn'?

Nick cares about people who slept through history class.

Spotify Playlist: Guardians Of The Galaxy Awesome Mix
Ever since the unlikely use of Hooked On A Feeling during a tiny snippet of Comic-Con footage last year, the soundtrack for Guardians Of The Galaxy has been an enticing prospect. Now Peter "Star Lord" Quill's Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is finally here in all its glory, and we have a Spotify embed of the whole thing. Have a listen here, or you can get a permanent hold of the soundtrack on Amazon, iTunes or many other sources.

    The Empire Podcast #123
If you've ever wanted to hear Robert Pattinson talk about camels and Simon Pegg explain the finer points of throwing a chair out of a window, you've come to the right Empire Podcast episode. As well as the star of The Rover (Pattinson) and the star of Hector And The Search For Happiness (Pegg), we also have an in-depth discussion of DC's new date selections - more fun than it sounds - and a meander through cinema and TV's best U.S. presidents in an effort to create a new Mount Rushmore.

Christina Hendricks And John Slattery Talk God's Pocket And Mad Men
Mad Men's shoot may have drawn to a close but old Sterling Cooper pals Christina Hendricks and John Slattery aren't done working together. God's Pocket, a murkily black comedy that sees them swap Madison Ave for a much less salubrious corner of Philadelphia, combines their talents - with Slattery behind the camera and Hendricks in front. We sunk 12 martinis, walked up 47 flights of stairs and vomited some hard-hitting questions at their feet. No, we didn't do that. Come on, we're professionals. Mostly.

    Double Trouble: 10 Of Cinema's Finest Sword-Swinging Dual-Wielders
If the Guardians Of The Galaxy were a Dungeons & Dragons team, they'd have a serious problem with defence. Boasting not one, not two, but three dual-wielders - Gamora with her swords, Drax with his knives, Star-Lord with his blasters - it's up to Groot to tank it up to the max and take most of the physical flak while the others dance around like Whirling Dervishes. Exceptionally nerdy role-playing commentary aside, Marvel's latest blockbuster marks a notable return for the armed and ambidextrous on screen, and in honour of that, here are ten of the, well... ten others (and a few more besides, to be generous).

Join us at the world exclusive event with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin and global fantasy bestseller Robin Hobb on 19th August in London. A must-attend for fantasy fans.

    'Synth-Based Stuff Doesn't Fly In Middle-earth'
The long, hushed corridors of Weta's Park Road offices possess the unsettling aura of the Overlook Hotel. Instead of the movie posters that decorate Peter Jackson's inner sanctum at Portsmouth Road, the walls feature vintage New Zealand travel posters: "Kiwis do fly!". Here across a highly desirable range of bespoke mixing stages, ADR studios, and recording dens, the dragon sneers and warg snarls of Middle-earth are created and the Black Tongue is refined for maximum clarity.

10 Potential New Characters For Guardians Of The Galaxy 2
Marvel's curveball space adventure is finally with us, and as is the way of these things, people are already talking about the next one. Few details have yet been revealed about James Gunn's developing sequel, but here are a few thoughts on possible future movie affiliates for Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot.

    10 Female Characters For Sony's New Spider-Film
If recent reports are to be believed, Sony is hoping to expand its Spider-Man universe with a film focused on a female hero. There are no details yet as to whom it might be, and any such film will have to compete with planned Spider-sequels and villain-focused Spider-spin-offs like Venom and The Sinister Six, but we thought we'd look at some of the notables from the comics...

How Much Is a Pint Of Milk: Sir Peter Ustinov
He's renowned for his extraordinary raconteur skills. He's been in five decades worth of films, but how does Sir Peter fare down at the local dairy emporium?

From Jurassic Park To Gotham City: Ten Unseen John Alvin Posters
In the pantheon of great movie illustrators, Drew Struzan isn't the only name to revere. The late John Alvin might not boast quite the same household name recognition - unless your household is also, say, a Tatooine moisture farm - but Hollywood's Best Kept Secret™ has left us an astonishing array of classic designs for some of our favourite movies. His trademark handcrafted style adorned the one-sheets of E.T., Cape Fear, Blade Runner, The Goonies and many others. A new book, curated by his wife and long-time collaborator Andrea, celebrates his life and work in the movie business, from Blazing Saddles in 1974 to 1999's Star Wars Celebration. Don your most nostalgia-tinged specs and prepare for some old-school movie magic. Oh... and Batman Forever.

    Classic Scene: Taxi Driver
Frustrated loner Travis Bickle, taxi driver, has flipped. In front of the mirror in his squalid room he practices drawing one of the guns he has strapped to his arm under his army jacket. He is muttering to himself and addressing an invisible adversary...

The Impossible Dream: Terry Gilliam's Quest To Make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
Terry Gilliam's quest to bring Don Quixote to the big screen is now itself the stuff of legend. For over 15 years he has had The Man Who Killed Don Quixote on his To Do list, and despite all that the fates have thrown at him he has never given up. Tilting at windmills he might be, but with today's news that he has a start date lined up, the director may yet slay this giant and prove himself at last. Here is the story so far...

    Michel Gondry Talks Mood Indigo
Monsieur Gondry has long been an expert in flights of fancy, having enchanted audiences with Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, The Science Of Sleep and even a few episodes of Flight Of The Conchords. Post-Green Hornet and after some documentary diversions, the Gallic genius has returned to his roots with Mood Indigo. An adaptation of a Boris Vian novel, it stars Audrey Tautou as Chloe, a sickly woman with a flower in her lungs, and Romain Duris as Colin, the man who's determined to save her.

Christina Hendricks used to drink in The Coronet on Holloway Road.

John Slattery is a massive fan of Dutch winger Arjen Robben.

If Jeff Goldblum attends your wedding, there is one photo you need to take.

Martin Freeman makes an exceptionally scary Richard III on stage at the Trafalgar Studios right now.

It's possible to make a Peter Pan-style hat out of a single lily pad.

How to dress up as Groot. How guitarists look during solos. Putting twins to bed. Ten hours of Jeff Goldblum laughing.

With this handy griddle pan, we're well-equipped to recreate one of The Raid 2's standout set-pieces. Except... wait, our health and safety representative has just confiscated it. Damn. Guess it's swords again then.

    The Inbetweeners 2

The Fannytastic Four leave us on a poo-flecked, piss-soaked, sun-burned high that more than overcomes its familiar flaws to become a real contender for the year's funniest film. Four star wankers.

    Also Out

Planes 2: Fire & Rescue Disney encounters backdraft.
God's Pocket The straits of Philadelphia.
    All This Mayhem Spin city.
    Moebius Venice-acclaimed black comedy.
    Lilting Make a Whishaw.

    Starred Up

A brutal, immersive prison survival story with a breakout performance by British actor Jack O'Connell.

    Also Out

Bound Like an All ties up nicely in this noir-esque thriller.
    The Legend Of Hercules Laborious.
    Rio 2 Parrot fashion.
Labor Day Blood, sweat and tears and more sweat.
