| This Week... This week saw another exciting development for Empire Presents... Big Screen, as we made a few early announcements about the line-up for the event. We'll be hosting the premieres of Cowboys & Aliens and Fright Night, as well as saying hello to Conan The Barbarian, the newest films from Aardman and much, much more. You'll have to get along to the O2 between August 12 and 14 to see the whole shebang: it's going to be mega. In other news, the launch of Transformers: Dark Of The Moon prompted a flurry of discussion, almost all of which missed the central question: how long has Spock been a Transformer? And why have we never seen a hint of this before? Are the Enterprise's shuttlecraft secretly robots too? Enquiring minds want to know! Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

| | | | | | First Look: Steven Spielberg's War Horse Trailer Judging by this trailer, Spielberg (and regular cinematographer Janusz Kaminski) are on form in a film that looks to be an earthy, or rather muddy, contrast to the 'Berg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn later this year. You'll have to squint hard to spot some of the cast members, however: blink and you'll miss the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Niels Arestrup, Eddie Marsan, Emily Watson, David Thewlis and David Kross. | | | | | More New Videos: First Mission: Impossible 4 Trailer Hits Ghost Protocol is a go. | | | | | 'It's Just A Bit Of Fun': Why Defensive Fans Are Bad News For Movies This is probably a blog that doesn't need saying for most people, but I write this in response to a criticism of this magazine and site that's becoming more and more common - and which I've heard several times today in relation to the new Transformers film. It's entirely possible that you like Michael Bay's Transformers films, and more power to you. You may well have enjoyed the two to date and be looking forward to Dark of the Moon. But what you can't sensibly do is respond to negative reviews with arguments like, "It's just a bit of fun" - and I'll explain why. | | | |
|
| | | | | The A To Z Of Michael Bay As Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is unleashed upon an unsuspecting world, it's time to once again consider the force of nature that is Michael Bay. He's one of the most successful directors in Hollywood and, love him or hate him, one of the most instantly recognisable in terms of style and content. | | |
| | | Tom Hanks Talks Larry Crowne Tom Hanks is arguably the nicest man on the face of the Earth. And he plays it close to type in Larry Crowne, where he not only takes the title role but also writes and directs. The story sees Crowne head to college after being made redundant, where he finds a whole new crowd of eccentric friends and develops a crush on his teacher (who, to be fair, is played by Julia Roberts). We caught up with Hanks - or, as his Twitter handle has it, Hanx - in London recently to ask about the film and what he's working on next... |
| | | Behind The Scenes On Don't Look Now Don't Look Now is a film that seems to get better with age. It's almost impossible to pin down - equal parts psychological horror, moving family drama and sharp-as-cut-glass whodunit set on the dank, wintery streets of Venice – and is inarguably director Nicolas Roeg's most influential film. Thanks to Roeg's masterful direction and Graeme Clifford's editing, mingling the everyday and the supernatural into something tender and unnerving, this Daphne du Maurier tale of a grieving couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) and a mysterious figure in a red coat still sends shivers down the spine. To mark its release in scarlet-duffle-coat-enhancing 1080p, Empire asked the film's cinematographer Tony Richmond to talk through some rarely-seen behind-the-scenes shots and stills from the production. |
| | | Naomie Harris On The First Grader The First Grader gives Naomie Harris the chance to play real-life teacher Jane Obinchu, a role that required her to do some actual teaching to a class of 80 Kenyan schoolkids. It was Method acting at its most demanding but a challenge that, Harris explained, she relished. She's promised to help us finally nail that maths GSCE. |
| | | Mission: Impossible 4 Trailer Breakdown If we're honest, J.J. Abrams's Mission: Impossible III looked like it might be a farewell note from Ethan Hunt and the good folk of IMF. But then the new trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol slammed down and that note self-destructed with a mighty 'kaboom'. Put simply, it looks a-w-e-s-o-m-e. It's everything you want from an M:I trailer: Tom Cruise throwing himself off of tall buildings, covert capers, things blowing up, double and triple crosses, and bonus Simon Pegg. Looks like a win to us. Here's how it breaks down... |
| | | Undiscovered Treasures Like movies? Like beer? Tiger Beer and Empire have teamed up to bring you Undiscovered Treasures, a series of great films that might have passed you by on their initial release. The next in the series is Heartless, an urban horror set in East London, Jim Sturgess stars as a young man with a heart shaped disfigurement on his face who makes a deal that leads to unintended consequences. We are screening Heartless on the 28th July at the Soho Hotel, hosted by Empire's Chris Hewitt and with a Q&A with the Director Philip Ridley. To apply click here. | | | |

| | | | | Transformers: Dark of the Moon An improvement on Transformers 2, but then what isn't? To paraphrase the Bard, it's a tale, full of sound and fury and extremely stupid dialogue and nonsensical plotting and preposterous stunts and robots punching each other's heads off, signifying nothing. Needless to say, it's going to be huge. | | | | Also Out | | | Watch Video This Week's Video Trailers And Clips Every week, our video player will update to show trailers and clips from the week's movie releases listed above. | | |
