This Week...
The wonderful world of movies has blown up in our faces this week - in a good way, like Crank 2: High Voltage or fireworks night at Michael Bay's house. Not only have we all clapped our blissed-out eyeballs on teaser trailers for The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man, but all the Hobbit dwarves have finally assembled and Peter Jackson has provided another peak at the goings-on in the Shire. Best of all, the annual movie, TV and comic-book bonanza that is Comic-Con has kicked off in San Diego. Needless to say, we've sent a crack Empire team to make sure that if it so much as sneezes, we'll be there to wipe its nose. Of course, not all of us were so lucky. Some people had to stay here and keep the office mouse at bay. If you're reading this mouse, we're ready for you…

Dark Knight Rises Teaser Is Official!
Various dodgy copies have been floating around the interwebs for the last few days, but here's an official, sanctioned, clean copy of The Dark Knight Rises' teaser trailer, in all its Batman-y goodness. And what does it give away? Well, not a vast amount. After a few bits of old footage and a reminder of Liam Neeson's advice to the would-be caped avenger way back in Batman Begins, we get just a few tidbits of new stuff.

Amazing Spider-Man Trailer Hits The Web
In it, you'll notice a distinct change of tone compared to Sam Raimi's previous adaptation of the Marvel fan favourite, feeling almost like an '80s horror film rather than a cuddly, creepy-crawly-based superhero adventure. There's the now almost obligatory Inception-like "BRAAAHM" noises here and there, rapid fades to black, and a good couple of shots of the lovely Emma Stone and the slightly-less-lovely Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors (but not, alas, as The Lizard).

Anything can happen when you roll with the crips
We think Empire's intrepid Reviews Editor, Nick, has crossed the tracks in San Diego. Unless he meant "crisps".

    John Carter: Edit Bay Visit
It's a year and a half since I got to visit the set of what was then called John Carter Of Mars and what is now known as John Carter. Recently, I got the chance to see the edit bay as well, where garrulous director Andrew Stanton hung out and explained what he's going for with the adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' series. We also got to see a few snippets of footage, and discuss the challenge of the film. And the biggest challenge, it seems to me, is adapting one of the oldest sci-fi stories out there in a world where virtually every book, comic and movie of the last century has ripped off your source material just a little bit.

    Comic-Con 2011 Coverage
Empire sent its crack-est team to San Diego to get the scoop on Comic-Con and we've got all the news for you in our dusk-til-dawn-til-dusk coverage. How are the likes of Prometheus, Pacific Rim and The Amazing Spider-Man shaping up? What about hot-button series like Alcatraz, The Walking Dead and Game Of Thrones? And would the mysterious Vidiblogisode Man and his nemesis, the even-more-mysterious Con Man, shake off the probation services long enough to stalk Hall H? All is revealed here.

  • 7 Star Wars Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off
This week saw Captain America's director, Joe Johnston, telling the press that he'd like to make a Star Wars spin-off centring around everyone's favourite intergalactic bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Nothing's concrete, of course, but it is an exciting proposition – what if Boba Fett's story was turned into a separate feature film? What other Star Wars characters might benefit from their own chance to shine? We had a poke around our Empire's Star Wars Anniversary Covers collection and have seven suggestions for you to debate, dispute and add to… But whatever your thoughts, let us know what they are in the comment box below, young padawans.

John Lasseter, Owen Wilson And Eddie Izzard Talk Cars 2
As befits a globe-trotting animation that sends its heroes, Mater and Lightning McQueen, around the world in a Bond-like spy adventure, the voicecast of Cars 2 has a distinctly transatlantic feel. In one corner, clad in Stars and Stripes, is Owen Wilson and Larry The Cable Guy; in the other, sipping tea and jingling Morris dancing bells, are Emily Mortimer and Eddie Izzard. During Empire's recent trip to Pixar HQ in Emeryville, we were lucky enough to speak to them all and discovered that, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, we're two nations united by a love of pigs. We also asked them about the joys of working at Pixar, their favourite toy versions of themselves and the advantages of being animated (Mortimer: "You can't have depressing hair"). Look out too for Mr The Cable Guy's take on Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. In between the singalongs and pig chat, we also spoke to director John Lasseter and producer Denise Ream about bringing Cars back for another outing.

Ten Things We're Excited About At Comic-Con
Expect a sudden shortage of geeks in your neighbourhood from tomorrow morning - unless you happen to live in the San Diego area. Comic-Con, the city's annual movie and comic-book extravanganza, kicks off in blur of blockbuster panels, hot-button TV shows and fanboys in Boba Fett costumes. Empire is there in force and will be filling you in on all the big movie news and red-button-worthy TV previews. But what's beeping across our Con radar prior to day one? Here's the pick of ten panels to look out for.

A Pictorial History Of The Lavender Hill Mob
BAFTA winning and much beloved, The Lavender Hill Mob is the most fun you can have in black and white. Rollicking along from the gilded halls of the Bank of England to the dank cellars of South London, then on to Paris and back again, it's a heist movie with an Ealing twinkle in its eye and tongue firmly planted in its cheek. There are nail-gnawing car chases, breakneck getaways and deviously hatched schemes to suck you into the mob's shenanigans, but it's the comic performances that bring you back for more. You'd be in good company. Martin Scorsese, an Ealing aficionado to the core, has lent his weight to a newly spruced, digitally-enhanced version. To mark the release and the film's 60th birthday, Empire has laid its hands on some rare glimpses behind the scenes. Keep your eyes peeled for a certain star in the making.

The Ultimate Horrible Bosses Picture Quiz
Horrible Bosses (out July 22, fact fans) is a movie about some bosses. That are horrible. These bosses are played by the likes of Jennifer Aniston (the sexually inappropriate boss), Colin Farrell (the amoral, evil, cocaine-addled boss) and Kevin Spacey (the incredibly manipulative, also evil boss) -- but they aren't the only despicable superiors to appear in film, not by a long chalk. So to celebrate bad bosses in movies, here's a 33-strong picture quiz of them, including one that some might think isn't that bad a boss at all... you'll see what we mean when you find him, promise.

Horrible Bosses Cast And Director Interviews
Horrible Bosses is a comedy movie film based around the idea of how it would feel to murder your evil, awful boss. The men who want to do the murdering are played by Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day, the bosses represented by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell. We got the chance to speak with these so-called murderers (and their director) when they were in town recently for the European premiere, and needless to say, we asked all the important questions. You know, like "Who would win in a fight?" and "What's your favourite way to procrastinate?" Clue: it doesn't involve murdering anyone. Shucks.

It's Captain America's new range of Diesel aftershave. Now you too can smell like an all-action, Hydra-battling superhero. An all-action superhero who's all showered and nice smelling, obviously.

Jason Bateman has never had an office job in his life.

Riding a giant wooden dinosaur off a pier is more dangerous than it sounds… and it sounds pretty dangerous. In case you were wondering, our Ali is recovering nicely. No word yet on the dinosaur.

Because it's not a proper noun, 'padawan' is not capitalised. That was a Tuesday afternoon well spent.

Meyer is the greatest character in the Danish Killing. Or possibly Theis. Or Lund. Or Troels. Okay, we can't decide but Lund definitely has the best jumpers.

The office mouse is smarter than us.

The TFL map reimagined for Time Lords. Spike Jonze! The Beasties! Again! Yay!! Jesse Eisenberg does a promo. World, meet 'blob jumping'.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to me.

    Cars 2

It's not vintage Pixar, but Cars 2 is still streets ahead of most of the animated pack. For all its energy and Bondian panache, perhaps its problems are insurmountable: Pixar's cars — and their universe — don't resonate and endear as much as its toys, monsters, clownfish and OAP dreamers.
