 | It's been all quiet at Empire Online's secret underground facility this week. One of our number is on the West Coast quizzing the cast of a hit TV show, while another has hotfooted it to Louisiana and onto the set of those 'major motion picture' things we keep hearing about. Sadly, for anyone else who'd like to see what those Aurochs are up to now, it isn't Beasts Of The Southern Wild 2. While we've awaited our gifts of gumbo, catfish and raccoon hats, there's been plenty to keep us busy, including an exclusive Ridley Scott blow-by-blow of his new Exodus trailer, a greatest hits of ILM effects work and the low-down on Richard Linklater's beautiful Boyhood. If you see one film this weekend, let it be that one. Phil de Semlyen Staff Writer, Empire Guardians Of The Galaxy! Inside The Summer's Coolest, Craziest Superhero Gamble! Marvel's new space epic is our cover star this month, and we've got an in depth feature bringing you all the details on the galaxy's weirdest heroes (also known as "a bunch of A-holes"). If you want a talking raccoon, a bald Karen Gillan and "an outer-space Liberace", we've got your fix right here. Find out more about what's inside the new issue. Exodus: Gods And Kings: Ridley Scott's Trailer Breakdown In a career littered with huge films - Gladiator, 1492, Prometheus - Exodus: Gods And Kings may be Ridley Scott's biggest yet. A retelling of the Biblical story of Moses and his quest to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, it's the sort of story that usually demands Charlton Heston and a cast of thousands. Happily, Scott has Christian Bale, Sigourney Weaver, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley and Aaron Paul, and, yes, a cast of thousands more. We asked him to talk us through some of the big moments in the trailer... | |
| | | Jay Baruchel Talks How To Train Your Dragon 2 Jay Baruchel is an immensely engaging human being. Smart as a whip and with a mouth that can spit words quicker than a Hookfang can blast flame, he is a journalist's dream interview: funny and not afraid of the odd swear or two. Here, in an interview that ran in part in issue 299 of Empire back in February, the voice of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III talks about everything from the word "bud" to what the original version of the first How To Train Your Dragon was going to be like before the new directors, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, came in and changed almost everything... |
| | | Ten Movie Formats That Shook The World The future is all around us and our beloved art form, cinema, is rapidly converting to a digital age. There are those, however, that are still hanging on to film that runs through a camera (see, for example, Christopher Nolan's die-hard celluloid advocate cinematographer Wally Pfister, who made his directorial debut - on film - with Transcendence this year), and theirs is obviously a massively important heritage. A full history of different film formats would take a multi-volume book series, but here is a whistle-stop tour of some of film's key moments, beginning with Thomas Edison and the Lumière brothers, and leading to Tony Scott and James Cameron. |
| | | Mark Ruffalo On Begin Again, Science Bros And Underpants Acting Empire's toodle to the newly opened Ham Yard Hotel, a stone's throw from Piccadilly Circus, to talk musical-romance-of-a-sort Begin Again carried us past Once, another John Carney film now enjoying a second life as a West End musical. As reminders of the often surprising lifespan of films, it takes some beating. Will Mark Ruffalo and his co-star James Corden find their characters living on in weird and surprising ways? Time will tell. In the meantime, would we ask them weird and surprising questions? Yes. Yes we would. Here's where to discover Ruffalo's favourite Science Bros meme. |
| | | Spotify Playlist: Now That's What I Call... Richard Linklater! Richard Linklater's career has shown time and again that the Texan director knows his music, from the Fred Astaires and Louis Armstrongs of Me & Orson Welles to his regular collaborations with composer Graham Reynolds. But it's good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll that most often takes centre stage. It's his unique mix of indie, slacker and School Of Rock rock that leads the charge in our Spotify playlist below, with his latest, the childhood-spanning Boyhood, coming in at the end to remind you how old you are. The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots first came out in 2002. Ridiculous. |
| | | How To Create Your Dragon - Build Your Own Toothless Today! Simon Otto is DreamWorks Animation's Head Of Character Animation for the How to Train Your Dragon series, and a thoroughly nice man too. Speaking to him at DreamWorks' Los Angeles HQ back in February, we asked about the "ingredients" that make up different dragons, and he was kind enough to sent us his notes on what makes each wyrm so wonderful. But before you begin assembling your very own out of yoghurt pots and IKEA bins, read his thoughts on how the monster mish-mash idea first came out... |
| | | Industrial Light & Magic's Greatest Hits With Transformers: Age Of Extinction crashing on to our screens soon, we thought we'd take a look at the work of the people who make giant robots stomping around possible. After all, no matter how good, bad or indifferent the film, chances are that the stuff that Industrial Light And Magic did looks pretty cool. So here, in our opinion at least, are just some the best bits of ILM's work... |
| | | How Much Is A Pint Of Milk: Michael Keaton If you've played one of DC's most popular superheroes and managed to cause mayhem in Beetlejuice, it's fair to say you've had a pretty great career. Michael Keaton is that man. But does the impossibly busy star of both Desperate Measures and Jackie Brown know the tote on his teat tucker? Find out in this classic Pint of Milk interview... |

| | | Empire Classic Scene: It Happened One Night Newspaperman in need of a scoop Peter Warne (Clark Gable) threatens to turn in runaway heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) unless she gives him her story. Forced to share his motel room, she watches dubiously as he hangs a blanket between the beds. (When Gable took his shirt off in this scene to reveal a bare chest, sales of vests plummeted across America). |
| | | Empire At EIFF 2014: Elijah Wood Q&A Without a shadow of a doubt, the most popular of Empire's Hero Hangouts at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival was one Mr. Elijah Jordan Wood. The star of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Wilfred and the forthcoming Set Fire To The Stars charmed and enthralled a packed house at the Lyceum Theatre, talking for over two hours (far beyond the allotted time) about his incredible career, from his start in Back To The Future Part II to his home-made audition for Frodo Baggins, and much, much more. |
