Gary Oldman And Keri Russell Talk Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Andy Serkis And Kevin Feige Podcast Interviews, Colin Farrell In Talks For True Detective 2

Get 6 Issues Of Empire From Just £15!
Celebrate our anniversary with our special offer!

This week, we're all excited about Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (and I for one welcome our new simian overlords) - so excited, in fact, that we were tempted to write the entire newsletter in the style of the movie's "Apes. Together. Strong!" speech. However, cooler and more homo sapien heads prevailed, so instead we'd just like to point you in the direction of this week's podcast , where we render unto Caesar the talk time that is Caesar's by talking to the man behind the ape, Andy Serkis. Look out on Monday for an Apes spoiler special too, when director Matt Reeves will be discussing some of the key plot points in the film. And that's just the tip of the iceberg in a week that has seen us hang out with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, chat to Community's Joel McHale and generally beaver away in the office instead of enjoying the nice sunshine. If you see several sad, pale, blinking creatures this weekend, that'll be us, so think about buying us an ice-cream, eh?

    Big Hero 6 Trailer Lands
Big Hero 6 is set in the slightly futuristic, vaguely fantastical city of San Fransokyo. Our hero is Hiro Hamada, an inventor and creator of squashy robot Baymax, who serves as both his sidekick and best pal. But when their home town comes under threat from a strange masked villain, Hiro must team up with a group of like-minded fellow wannabe warriors, who use their technical skills to create battle suits with different abilities. And even then, they might be in over their heads...

Gary Oldman And Keri Russell Talk Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes stars Gary Oldman and Keri Russell were on fine form for their Empire video interview, happily suggesting what the sequel to DOTPOTA should be called, and desperately trying to remember what the previous movies in the franchise actually are called. Listen out for a fine Kenneth Williams impersonation.

    The Empire Podcast #120
Here to talk about the upcoming Marvel space opera Guardians Of The Galaxy is the head honcho of all things Marvellous, Kevin Feige, but as you'd expect, we also asked him about just why Edgar Wright left Ant-Man (and much, much more). Then there's Caesar himself, Andy Serkis, who dropped by to talk about his latest, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, and suggest what might be his character's favourite cocktail. Hint: it's not a banana daiquiri.

24: Live Another Day Empire Podcast Special
The season finale has only just aired, so now it's our duty on the Empire Podcast to talk through the institution that is 24, and where the end of this very special London-set season leaves fans of the show. Here to help us do just that is longtime director and producer of the show, Jon Cassar, who came by to talk clocks, cougars and whether they'll all come back again...

Director Charlie Siskel On Finding Vivian Maier: 'To Me, This Is A Great Detective Story'
Unknown as an artist during her lifetime, Chicago nanny Vivian Maier took thousands of photographs during practically her every waking moment, revealing a preternatural and self-taught talent for capturing documentary images. John Maloof discovered her by chance when he bought a box of her undeveloped film at auction, beginning his own journey to bring her to posthumous public attention. The documentary Finding Vivian Maier, out this week, is part of a wider ongoing unveiling that also includes books and exhibitions. Maloof co-directed the film with Charlie Siskel, who spoke to Empire recently about the process of unravelling the Maier mystery. Unlike Maloof, Siskel chose not to also appear in front of the camera. "I prefer it that way," he smiles.

    Secret Cinema: The Inside Story
If you've ever wanted to yell, "GREAT SCOTT!" at Marty McFly, call Biff a butthead or dangle off a clock tower until the local authorities arrive, your day is at hand. Secret Cinema, the events team who have previously recreated the future-LA of Blade Runner, the maddening offices of Brazil and the balmy chambers of Lawrence Of Arabia, have turned their attention to Back To The Future. From July 24 to August 31, fans will be able to immerse themselves in the world of the time-travel comedy, with both of its time periods brought to life in painstaking detail, before watching the film itself. The location of the London venue is secret (duh), but the man behind Secret Cinema, Fabien Riggall, got on the phone to give us a taste of what to expect, as well as the tales behind the company's most memorable shows...

Stan Lee Announces Empire's Amazing Spider-Man 2 Poster Competition Winner
Last month Empire launched an exclusive competition for its readers to design a webtastic poster that would be given away with every purchase of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 steelbook at the UK's leading entertainment retailer, HMV. The competition garnered a huge amount of entries that ranged from the creative to the comic and back again, leaving the artistic bods here at Empire HQ and down the road at HMV's head office with a tough time choosing their favourite, but after much deliberation, a winner was picked. The man behind ol' Webhead himself, Stan Lee, did us the honour of announcing the winner - so click play on the video after the click to see who won and then scroll through our gallery of top ten entries. And thanks to everyone who entered, true believers!

Classic Pint Of Milk Interview: The Coen Brothers
They buried Dan Hedaya alive, put Steve Buscemi in a woodchipping machine and floated Jeff Bridges over Los Angeles. But do übercool siblings Joel and Ethan Coen whip round for their weekly white stuff?

    Keith Carradine On Keith Carradine
There are actors who've tried out their vocal chords as rock stars and pop stars who've given Hollywood a shot, and, in the case of Rihanna (Battleship) and Michael Jackson (Moonwalker), probably wished they hadn't. Keith Carradine, a Robert Altman collaborator, '70s heartthrob and one of four acting siblings, has nailed both. He's one of very few Oscar-winning thesps to have won awards for his singing as well as his acting - he collected Best Original Song for Nashville's folk ditty 'I'm Easy' in 1975 - and subsequently enjoyed a brief spell of popstardom. For a moment, a lifetime of tour buses and obscure rider demands beckoned. But as he explained when Empire reached him, via Skype, on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Ridley Scott had other ideas...

    Classic Scene #23: Casablanca
Hunted by the authorities, resistance leader Laszlo is shepherded to the airport with his wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) by her former lover, nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart). In a gesture of unexpected nobility, Rick bids farewell to the love of his life - throwing the Nazi pursuers off the scent in the process.

Scriptwriting Competition: Write Locke's Next Phone Call
We want you, in no more than 500 words, to tell us how Ivan's (Hardy) next phone call would go. You can carry on directly from the end of the film, or start from when you think he'd make his next call. Lay it out as you like - scripted as a film scene or as dialogue alone - as long as it's no more than 500 words, your entry will be valid. Submit your answers into the forum below before the closing date of August 18 when Steven Knight himself will pick his favourite entry. The winner will receive a personal message from Steven, along with a 16GB iPad Mini and a copy of Locke on Blu-ray. Five finalists will also receive a copy of the film on Blu-ray.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

A superbly mounted, powerfully performed, if slightly underfed Apes sequel. That Reeves is set to direct Untitled Of The Planet Of The Apes next is cause for much celebration. This guy's fur real. No pun intended.
