 | Hollywood has spent a lot of time perusing its own back catalogue lately. This week alone has seen news about remakes / new instalments for Point Break, The Flintstones, Private Benjamin, Power Rangers, The Stand and Beverly Hills Cop. It's only a matter of time before every film ever gets a remake, but we may have a way for you to fight back! Voting is still open in our Greatest Movies Ever poll, and a place on the list is the last, best chance for many films to sidestep the remake machine. After all, if they're truly great , only a fool would dare to touch them and risk sullying that legacy. What we're saying is, you have it in your power to save Hollywood from itself, elevate your favourite films to the pantheon of greats and ensure that people will think twice before casting Justin Bieber in a comic prequel to The Godfather (or whatever. Jeez, Hollywood, stop writing that down! We're just kidding!). Get your thinking caps on, cast your eyes back over your DVD collection and your mind back over a lifetime of movies, and give us your choices. You are cinema's only hope. | | | Why Sir Ian McKellen And Sir Patrick Stewart Rule The Internet What's better than one classically-trained actor, also noted for his later life geek-friendly roles, who enjoys posting odd pictures online? Why, two such actors, of course, so thank goodness for Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, who can be relied upon to brighten up the internet on a regular basis. And now they've finished their long run on Broadway, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past is just around the corner, we thought we'd gather their best online moments in one handy spot. |
| | | Film Studies 101: A Beginner's Guide To Aspect Ratios A point of pride for many film buffs is a knowledge and love of aspect ratios. You can often hear their excited gasps of delight in any cinema showing the new, pristinely presented Wes Anderson, or see them stomp off to see the management if the local multiplex isn't projecting a Coen Brothers film in quite the correct ratio. Yet with all the various incarnations of image sizes over the years, it's easy to get lost or confused. Never fear - if you've ever wondered about the difference between Academy Ratio and CinemaScope, or why the hell your TV is shaped the way it is, Empire can make it all crystal clear... |

| | | Star Wars Archive: Harrison Ford, Solo Artist In the '70s, Harrison Ford spent a lot of time in London. First there was Star Wars, then there was Force 10 From Navarone, then The Empire Strikes Back... He was becoming homesick, and when Ridley Scott first offered him the lead in Blade Runner Ford declined because the shoot, as it was planned at that time, would have brought him, yet again, to London. It's worth mentioning this because, unusually for a Hollywood star, Ford has a firm grasp of the English sense of humour. He has a reputation for being terse and combative in interviews, but, really, this is a man who simply doesn't suffer fools gladly. He's more like a headmaster, affecting a professional detachment while actually daring you to challenge him on an intellectual level. As he told one especially knock-kneed interviewer, "I'm not arguing with you - I just need some definition." |
| | | Jeremy Saulnier Talks Blue Ruin Reservoir Dogs. Blood Simple. Memento... Great careers bloom from cryptic titles, and Blue Ruin may yet see its writer/director/DoP Jeremy Saulnier leaving the indie sector pretty sharpish. The story of bearded drifter Dwight (Macon Blair) whose life is snapped into focus by the release of the man who wronged his family, it is a taut and bloody revenge thriller, the kind one might expect from an intelligent guy in his 30s, reared on films by John Carpenter, Sam Raimi and George Romero. We spoke to the Brooklyn-based director as the film - which debuted to universal acclaim in Cannes 2013 - is released in the UK... |

| | | The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back: Tales From The Dark Side Dagobah, the stinking, foetid swamp planet, long forgotten at the corner of the galaxy, was to be found on Elstree's Soundstage 3. Here production designer Norman Reynolds had flooded the concrete floor and planted Old Man's Beard, a hardy perennial that flourishes without sunlight. Fogged with dry ice, it became a dense, morbid place, just as George Lucas had imagined. In this purpose-built bog, the young Luke Skywalker was to get his Jedi training from master Yoda - the two-foot, melon-headed imp with a droll inverted speech pattern delivered by Muppeteer Frank Oz. Mark Hamill was finding these pivotal Yoda scenes taxing, all too aware of the technicians wiggling the little fella into action and, with his director Irvin Kershner below decks, he felt stranded and lost. It was a mood that had prevailed through the whole shoot, and as he slumped down for his last taste of Dagobah, and, as his rubber co-star urged him "to feel the Force", the weariness threatened to engulf him. Then, across the swamp there came a high-pitched screech from another galaxy altogether. |
| | | Dave Filoni Talks Star Wars Rebels Dave Filoni has spent a lot of time in the Star Wars universe. After overseeing The Clone Wars, he is now executive-producing Star Wars Rebels, the latest official animated series. Set to air this autumn, the story centres on a misfit band of would-be rebels fleeing the Empire and looking for an alternative. Their number includes a Mandalorian weapons expert / graffiti artist, a "cowboy Jedi", a crack pilot, a teen thief and a heavy who's based on Ralph McQuarrie's original designs for Chewbacca. A motley crew, in other words. But what's in store for the show, and how does it TIE tie in to the wider Star Wars universe? We spoke to Filoni to learn more... |
