 | It's Good Friday! That means that by the time you read this, we'll be lying on a beach earning 20% off for the Bank Holiday, fasting in preparation for an orgy of chocolate egg eating on Sunday. But cinema never sleeps, and this weekend sees the debut of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Locke among others. The former reflects the joys of spring, at least in Gwen Stacey's fabulous collection of pastel-coloured coats, and the latter reflects the trials and tribulations of trying to travel on a holiday weekend as Tom Hardy has a tough journey down the M6. Um. Or something. There's more information about both on the site, as well as big news about X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Spooks: The Greater Good (the greater good - sorry, went a bit Hot Fuzz there), Game Of Thrones, The Sinister Six and much, much more. So if you need a momentary break from stuffing Crème Eggs in your face, find it right over here. Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire Subscribe And Get 12 Issues Of Empire From Just £25! While we're not 100 per cent convinced it'll be the absolute last promo (the film doesn't hit cinemas until next month), it certainly delivers on the scale and the story. One word of caution: there are a lot of fun things to see here, but also parts of the movie you may wish to wait to save for the big screen. | | | Ten Things To Know About The Spooks Movie The Spooks Movie - YES, THEY'RE MAKING A SPOOKS MOVIE! - is freshly underway on MI5's home turf in London with running, shooting and people shouting "the package is down, the package is down!" at each other. Calling the shots on this bigger budget espionage-athon is director Bharat Nalluri. The series veteran has the tricky task of extending the show's hour-long format into a feature-length thriller without jettisoning the character beats that made it so popular or palely imitating the James Bonds and Jason Bournes of this world. How will he do it? Well, as he explained, he's got some aces up his sleeve. Here's ten of them. |
| | | John Michael McDonagh Talks Calvary The Guard saw Brendan Gleeson star as a hard-drinking, drug-taking, whore-frequenting policeman who takes up arms against a drug smuggling cartel. Director John Michael McDonagh's follow-up, Calvary, is a very different affair. Gleeson still stars, but this time as a good priest who's told in confession that one of his parishoners will kill him in a week's time. We talked to the director recently to go into the film in more depth - and while we've avoided specific spoilers, there are a few more general questions addressed, and we have put in a spoiler warning before the last two questions for the really sensitive. |
| | | Who's In Spider-Man's Sinister Six? There's a maxim in football that you're only as strong as your bench, and with the Sinister Six, the evil talent pool runs deep. For one thing, there's more than six of them (clever bastards), and, for another, their line-up is pretty changeable. Sony has announced that a Sinister Six film is headed our way from writer/director Drew Goddard, along with a solo outing for another Spider villain, Venom, and a straight sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 3. But what can we expect from the sextet's film? What order these films will come in remains to be seen, rather complicating our prognostications, but we've examined the comics and films to find the likely contenders. |

| | | The Remake Report: Hollywood's Do-Overs Coming Our Way Like it or loathe it, remakes have been happening since the dawn of cinema - The Wizard Of Oz was one; so was His Girl Friday - and show no sign of slowing down, especially in an era where companies are looking for known brands on which to hang ostensibly new films. We thought we'd round up some of the remakes and reimaginings currently in development to get you excited (or worried). We've focused on those still stalking the halls of development as opposed to films, like Fox's Fantastic Four, that are now in production. |

| | | Exclusive: The Nebraska Playlist Six pictures into his filmmaking career, and Alexander Payne is establishing himself as one of Hollywood's finest writer/directors. Of course, he didn't write Nebraska, his latest Oscar-nominated road-trip movie, but it's a Payne film from start to finish, infused with his offbeat comic sensibility, shot through with the wry poignancy that's become his trademark, and beautifully acted. As commentators are fond of mentioning, Payne's sensitive direction has helped guide seven of his cast members to acting nods at the Oscars, a fact guaranteed to elicit a warmer response than questions about Nebraska's monochrome look. "What's not fun is talking about 'Why black and white?'," he reflects when Empire calls him at his home in Omaha, "because I've answered that 500,000 times. But with an open heart, I'm very grateful for the interest in my movies." Steering dramatically away from the subject, we asked him to recommend six films closely related to his Best Picture nominee as Nebraska heads to DVD and Blu-ray. |
| | | Tom Hardy: A Viewer's Guide An actor of astonishing range, just as comfortable inhabiting guttural types like Charles Bronson and Tinker Tailor's Ricki Tarr as he is playing more manicured gentlemen like Inception's Eames, Tom Hardy is in demand and on the rise. His latest film, Steven Knight's motorway-set drama Locke, is a persuasive showcase for his gifts. In it he plays a construction worker faced with a potentially life-changing dilemma. With the world at his feet, the 36 year-old actor seemingly has only the nicer sorts of choices to make these days. We've looked back on his ascent to prominence with a swift cruise through the highs and lows of his career to date. |
| | | The 10 Most Exciting Movies At Cannes 2014 Between May 14 and 25, the Cannes International Film Festival will play host to some of the most gifted and glamorous faces in movieland. Empire, whose face likes to think it combines both qualities into one geeky visage, will be there covering every gala, screening and soirée worth physically breaking into. But which movies will hoover up the most attention in the Midi? Our very own Damo-on-the-spot, Damon Wise, has picked his ten to keep an eye out for. |
| | | Locke: A Filmmaker's Journey After a stuttering start to his directorial career with Statham-in-Soho drama Hummingbird, Steven Knight has hit the criticial motherlode with his follow-up. His acclaimed drama, Locke, is what the writer/director describes as "a very ordinary tragedy" in which construction site foreman Ivan Locke (a stellar Tom Hardy) skips out on a vital concrete pour for a night drive down the M6 that will change his, and several other lives. Back in his hometown for the film's Birmingham premiere, Knight talks Empire through the five stages of making his auto-drama. |

Locke There are films to see on huge screens, but this is one that almost cries out for a small cinema, surrounded by total blackness. It's a daring experiment brilliantly executed, with Tom Hardy giving one of the performances of his career. Also Out Nebraska A charming road movie that develops into a full-blown study of life and roots, offering a beautiful insight into the way families migrate and change. Also Out | |
