It's been a week of controversies. The casting announcement for the leads in the 50 Shades Of Grey movie saw the internet in an uproar, the question of Blu-ray extras got people worked up and there was a split through the Empire office itself over this week's Riddick. Thank goodness, then, for the happier things in life, like our big celebration of all things Richard Curtis to mark the release of his cheery new movie, a round-up of the funniest movie poster mash-ups we've ever had, and a preview of the best new shows headed to US (and hopefully UK) TV this autumn. Let's focus on these things, and remember that there's still goodness, decency and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the world.

Robocop Reboot Trailer Online
The team behind the new RoboCop knows they have a fight on their hands. There's an uphill struggle to be fought against those who don't think a remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic is necessary and who are waiting, perhaps, to be convinced it could work. We got a look at some new footage and a decent trailer at Comic-Con, and now the latter is online for your viewing pleasure.

James worries after Ally threw away the vampire-killing kit.

There's No Excuse For Misogyny In Space
It is a truism and a truth that science-fiction reflects the norms of the time in which it is written more than it accurately predicts the future. For every Arthur C. Clarke or Isaac Asimov story that correctly envisaged some future piece of technology, there are ten that feature antediluvian attitudes to women and patronising (at best) sexism. The original series of Star Trek, justifiably lauded for its multiracial cast and forward-thinking parables, still couldn't quite stomach a female First Officer (she was jettisoned after the pilot) and put its women in secondary roles as nurses and communication officers. But that was then. It's 50 years later, and here we are, still struggling with science-fiction that envisages a future where women just aren't good enough to lead men.

The Greatest Casting Controversies - And How They Turned Out
The internet has given humanity many advantages and opportunities in the last decade or two, and one of those is the chance to share your opinion on film casting before a frame of footage is shot. As soon as an actor is chosen for a hotly contested role, the internet starts to melt down as people debate why he or she will or won't rule or suck - as shown in the last couple of weeks by the casting of Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunnam in hot-button roles. There were casting controversies before, of course, but online in the last few years it's stepped up to a whole new level. Here are the biggest casting kerfuffles old and new, and how they turned out...

    The Empire Podcast #77
Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl share stories from their days on soap sets during their interview on this week's Empire Podcast, also touching on runaway killer tyres, Mario Kart and Scalextric in honour of Rush, out next week. Elsewhere, Ain't Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery reveals his neverending love of Star Wars, Malick and moustaches, while the team discuss the 50 Shades Of Grey casting news, Transformers 4's Dinobots - whatever they are - and the best composers that ever composed.

Exclusive Competition: Design The Cover Of The Only God Forgives Steelbook DVD
OK people, listen up! It's time to stop doodling and get serious with this art stuff. Empire has got one of the most exciting competitions ever lined up and we want everyone involved. It's all accompanied by visuals on the big screen.

Vin Diesel And Katee Sackhoff Talk Riddick
Riddick is the third in the series of films that began with the low-budget sci-fi success Pitch Black in 2000, and sees Vin Diesel return as the 'Furyan' warrior, left for dead on a hostile planet. Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) plays one of the bounty hunters who turns up to try to take him in and collect the price on his head. We spoke to both recently in LA to get the lowdown on Riddick's dark side, onscreen nudity, befriending bears and what's next...

The A To Z Of Richard Curtis
Richard Curtis's career has been an often hilarious realm of fumbly romantic heroes, dimbulb sidekicks, sarky Elizabethan courtiers, lady vicars, Timelords, talking gorillas, Armstrong Whitworth cannonettes ("for years of trouble-free maiming") and a small, malodorous man called Baldrick. As one of Britain's foremost creative forces over the past 30 years, it's sad to learn that his return with time-travelling romance About Time may also be his last as a director, but at least it's the perfect excuse to embark on a time (and alphabet-) spanning creation of our own, with a little help from Blackadder's producer, the editorial team of Horse & Hound and the man himself. Welcome ladies, gentlemen and plump-breasted pigeons to Empire's A-Z of Richard Curtis.

Rachel McAdams And Domhnall Gleeson Talk About Time
If you want to see Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson giggle a lot, you've come to the right Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson video interview. In it, they talk about Gleeson's favourite dance move - hint: it's mainly doing the double thumbs up and wiggling - the most memorable Blackadder lines and whether McAdams has actually watched the movie yet. Elsewhere, Bill Nighy makes us feel insignificant by being very well dressed and exceptionally relaxed to boot, and Richard Curtis himself talks about his love of Ben Folds' 'The Luckiest' and how he managed to get it in the film...

Casey Affleck & Rooney Mara Talk Ain't Them Bodies Saints
Ain't Them Bodies Saints is a '70s-set Western romance (of a sort) starring Casey Affleck as Bob Muldoon, a man who goes to jail instead of his pregnant wife (Rooney Mara's Ruth) after she wings a police deputy in a shoot out. Years after the incident, Bob busts out of prison and heads straight to Ruth and his child, only to find that things have changed and a kind-hearted sheriff (Ben Foster) is standing in his way. Directed and written by newcomer David Lowery, it's an indier-than-indie period piece, all mood and brood and corn fields, leading many to compare it to Terrence Malick's work. Here the two leads talk about hats, scripts and that name...

Are The Studios Trying To Kill Blu-Ray?
Consumers were sold on Blu-ray with promises that this would be the last word in high-quality film transfers and that the discs would come fully loaded with extras. Now, however, extras are being parcelled out to multiple retailers and buyers are forced to buy several copies if they want a complete set, while the format seems to be more and more neglected by big studios. So have they given up on physical media?

    Venice Film Festival 2013

    About Time

More than just a time-travel rom-com, this is a movie that asks you questions and doesn't sugar-coat as many of the answers as you'd expect. Smart and sweet, funny and genuinely moving. Should probably come with a 'there's something in my eye' warning.

    Also Out

    Ain't Them Bodies Saints Sadlands.

    Rebellion

Rebellion doesn't set out to be a crowdpleaser; nor is it really a thriller, despite its subject. Rather it's an absorbing political drama, eloquent and angry.
