 | This Week... Happy Birthday to us! The Empire Podcast turns 1 today, and like all toddlers it's prone to dribbling, barely coherent and much loved by its proud parents. Over the last year we've had visitors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Denzel Washington and, er, Kermit the Frog, and many of you have been kind enough to tune in every week to listen to the general mayhem. From here on in, it's onwards and upwards as we try to land even more star names, try to think of even more arthouse jokes to introduce Phil and struggle to remember a time before the word "Podbye" entered the lexicon. | | | | | How To Make A Movie Entrance From the Ringo Kid in Stagecoach to Harry Lime in The Third Man, cinema's greatest characters rarely content themselves with an ordinary entrance. Not for these ladies and gentlemen the humble shuffle in from stage left or a demure wave from an overcrowded train platform. Unlike us, you'll rarely meet them tripping over a dog or trying to remember where they left their house keys - not when there's dry ice, a shimmering horizon or some shadows to emerge from. Here's some top tips for making your intro count, big screen-style. | |

| | | Empire's Warwick Davis Podcast Special Harry Potter, Star Wars, Leprechaun, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Life's Too Short... Warwick Davis has appeared in many, many things, but nothing quite like his very own Empire Podcast special. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of his starring role alongside Val Kilmer in Willow, there's plenty on incantations, morphing and magical acorns, as well as some top baking tips, just because. |
| | | Judge Reinhold On The Beverly Hills Cop TV Show Judge Reinhold is an actor, a raconteur, and the subject of 2008 Empire feature Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged By Judge Reinhold, in which he turned the tables on his films' reviewers by critiquing their syntax and grammar. He's also, of course, the star of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, playing Axel Foley's loveable sidekick Billy Rosewood across three movies. When the news broke recently that CBS have greenlit a big-budget Beverly Hills Cop TV pilot, with Eddie Murphy and Reinhold returning, we rang up Judge to get his ruling... |
| | | 25 Jaw-Dropping Movie Car Leaps Back in the '70s and '80s, action movies and TV shows were full of cars flying through the air. It was glorious, and part of the fun was the audience's complicity with the filmmakers: we knew the cars folded up and fell to bits when they landed, and got replaced before they drove off. We just didn't care. There's something about a jumping car and the forbidden thrills and freedom it represents. With the advent of CGI, these crazy stunts are now kind of a lost art. You'll still occasionally see some retro-style jumping, often in a classic car, but it's rare to feel that frisson of excitement in knowing that some lunatic has actually been in the driving seat for the stunt. Here then, is a tribute to those mad men who risked life and spine for disposable redneck car-chase comedies. It's also a partial chronology of what we're loosely calling "the genre", from Bullitt to the Fast & Furious franchise: 25 of our favourite ridiculous vehicular moments from the last five decades. Where these guys were going, they didn't need roads... |

| | | Empire's Ultimate Collection Of Movie Supercuts Blogger Andy Baio came up with the term 'supercut' for an internet phenomenon he describes as "a genre of video meme, where some obsessive-compulsive superfan collects every phrase/action/cliche from an episode (or entire series) of their favorite show/film/game into a single massive video montage." In the following 24 pages, we've collated over 150 of our favouries pieces of pop culture pinnickityness, mostly centred around film with a few TV numbers at the end. |
