 | This Week... If you have a pulse, the news that Star Wars spin-offs are being planned, to focus on Han Solo's younger days and Boba Fett's prime, probably got that pulse racing - even if you were really holding out for a Gamorrean Guard comedy spin-off called Pig Men! This week we looked at the Star Wars characters who deserve a spin-off in future, the game characters we'd like to see in the next Wreck-It Ralph outing and - on a slightly more sensible note - talked to Helen Mirren about Hitchcock and Gael García Bernal about No (that's his new film, not some Far Eastern philosophy or Ian Paisley tribute). In further exciting news, this weekend is the BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House, and Empire will be there to bring you all the news from the ceremony. Will it be Lincoln's night? Or could Life Of Pi, Les Misérables or Argo spoil the President's party? If it were up to us we'd let the nominees duke it out (we reckon Lincoln's long reach would secure his victory) but when we suggested it to BAFTA they said that was "too violent" and "not artistically worthy". Some people have no vision. The ratings would go through the roof. Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | House Of Cards: Our First Reaction The opening salvo in Netflix' televisual revolution is predictably glossy, starry and expensive. But the streamer's first move into original programming is also bravely adult, reaching for its audience with smart dialogue, tangles of political backstabbing, and slow burn storylines. It's gunning for the prestige of HBO, not the ass 'n' action of Starz. And it's a killer first blow. | | | |

 | | | | | 10 Video Game Cameos We Want To See In Wreck-It Ralph 2 Sonic, Tails, Zangief, Kano, Pac-Man, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde... the roster of video game character cameos in Wreck-It Ralph is not to be sniffed at. But with a bumper box office over in the US late last year - $183 million, and a whopping $377m so far worldwide - the sequel is practically guaranteed, forcing director Rich Moore to consider who he's going to 'cast' in the next film to top Chun-Li and co. To help him with his quest, here are just 10 of suggestions of characters to include next time around. | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #47 This week's Empire Podcast is somewhat video game-flavoured this week, with J.J. Abrams' plans for a Portal and/or Half-Life film in the news section and Wreck-It Ralph in the reviews department. Then there are our interviewees, Messrs John C. Reilly (for Wreck-It Ralph) and Nicholas Hoult (for Warm Bodies), who share zombie grunting and Step Brothers quoting secrets for your listening pleasure - though you'll have to work who shared which secret for yourself... |
| | | Gael Garcia Bernal Talks No It may sound like a prequel to Dr. No set before the iron-handed megalomaniac went to medical school, but Oscar-nominated drama/thriller No is actually a sly, witty look at the advertising campaign to unseat Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in a 1998 plebiscite. It's about the power of humour, marketing and a well-selected montage to cure the world of its ills and right in the wheelhouse of its star, Gael Garcia Bernal. The charming, brainy actor chatted happily about making the film and his memories of the '80s. Look out for tales of his stonewash shame and soft-rock confessions. |
| | | Helen Mirren Talks Hitchcock Helen Mirren plays Alfred Hitchcock's wife, Alma Reville, in Sacha "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" Gervasi's dramatic debut, Hitchcock. Acting alongside Anthony Hopkins, Mirren's role reveals how much of Reville is in Hitch's work, as well as how satisfying it is to stress eat caviar after you've had an argument with The Master Of Suspence. |
| | | Stuart Freeborn At Work: Turning Alec Guinness Into Fagan With the death of the great Stuart Freeborn, cinema has lost a true pioneer. Born on the same patch of Leytonstone as Alfred Hitchcock, he made a name for himself in the same gilded era of British cinema, working with Korda, Powell and Pressburger, before turning his eye for character design and prosthetics to big Hollywood blockbusters - Superman and Star Wars among them. Working with David Lean and the 34 year-old Alec Guinness on Oliver Twist, he created a controversial but indelible character. |
| | | 9 Star Wars Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off It's true, Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders, Empire, Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand, Jumper, Sherlock Holmes) are both writing standalone Star Wars films in addition to J.J. Abrams' highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII (itself written by Toy Story 3's Michael Arndt). But with so many Star Wars characters out there - see our The 30 Greatest Star Wars Characters and 25 Great Star Wars Characters You've Probably Never Heard Of features for details - who deserves their own feature film spin-off? Here are just nine examples but be warned: you're about to enter the never-ending sarlacc pit of the extended Star Wars universe, and it's pretty heavy down there... |
| | | Salma Hayek And Benicio del Toro Talk Savages Savages was released in cinemas on September 21, 2012, so you might be wondering why video interviews with the stars of that movie are suddenly online five months later. The answer has something to do with Savages coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, and in a rare moment of insight, we've been keeping some clips back for that purpose. Marvel, then, at one poor, poor movie journalist desperately trying to keep eye contact with Salma Hayek. Don't worry, you'll see... |
| | | Exclusive Judd Apatow Webchat Transcript The comedy writer / producer / director / mentor / guru that is Judd Apatow visited the Empire office recently, and this webchat transcript is the result. Answering questions about everything from his latest, This Is Forty, to Chris O'Dowd, Breaking Bad and Freaks And Geeks, he shared a few insights and even revealed his favourite ever joke about the male sex organ. So that's nice. |
| | | Rafe Spall And Rose Byrne Talk I Give It A Year I Give It A Year is a rather unusual rom-com. The two romantic leads, Rafe Spall and Rose Byrne, play a newly-married couple that discover that they don't actually get along that well. As they learn more about this unforunate state of affairs, doves attack - see the trailer for more details - Stephen Merchant makes everything rather awkward and the word 'quim' somehow crops up in a game of charades. So for questions (and answers) on all that, have a look at this giggly video interview with Byrne and Spall... |
