This Week...

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit - until one day he decided to move into your local multiplex instead. Yes, Peter Jackson's latest journey to Middle-earth has finally arrived and we're all rather excited. This week we brought you the premiere report, the last of our dwarf-y profiles, A-list directors on Peter Jackson and a series of interviews with the principal cast-members in our podcast, as well as video interviews with five of the leads and PJ himself (link).". We've also given up wearing shoes to better get in touch with our Hobbit sides, and spent a lot of time pipe-smoking, so that's nice. Elsewhere on the site we have gathered together a complete guide to James Bond's globetrotting travels, published a Movie Menu of 2012 and revealed our skull-cracking review of Jack Reacher. It's like Christmas every day around here.

New Man Of Steel Trailer Is Here!
The first Man Of Steel teasers opted for a moodier tone for Zack Snyder, Chris Nolan and David Goyer's take on Superman than most Supes adventures when they first appeared back in July. It's a tone that's most definitely continued in the first official full trailer, which you can watch after the click.

Dubai International Film Festival 2012 Reports
Were you to travel to the Dubai International Film Festival on Emirates Airlines, one of its principal sponsors, you could be forgiven for thinking you's seen enough movies for a while. For anyone who remembers the heady early days of Virgin Atlantic and the thrill of an actual choice of movies (plus seat-back screens, the size of a cigarette packet though they were), Emirates' profusion of cinematic delights will rock your world. The screens are huge, even in Economy, and the selection is mind-boggling - literally hundreds of films, from classics, world cinema and Bollywood to over eighty new releases. You can programme your own personal film festival before you even get to Dubai.

Empire's Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Video Interviews
After a nine year hiatus, Peter Jackson is finally carrying us back into Middle-earth. The story of Tolkien's hobbit won't be unfamiliar to you, and the tale of its journey to the big screen - Guillermo del Toro's departure, questions over locations, two-films-becoming-three, 48FPS and the rest - has been almost as eventful as Bilbo's journey to the Misty Mountains, so we pottered down to meet Jackson and his cast at an Unexpected Junket and quiz them on the movie.

Empire's Hobbit 'How Quickly Can You Name The Dwarves?' Video Interview
With 13 dwarves in Thorin's company - including Mr. Oakenshield himself - it's a bit tricky for headmaster Gandalf to do a headcount while they're dashing through a particular perilous bit of peril. The solution, as seen in the trailer, is to just shout out their names, all in a row - and though we know Professor Gandalf can do it, can the rest of the cast? Here then is a supercut of Aidan Turner, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis giving the task their best (and fastest) shot...

Empire's Hobbit 'What's In Your Pocket?' Video Interview
Taking a leaf out of Gollum's bookses, we quizzed Peter Jackson and his Hobbit cast to find out what they have in their pockets. Hoping that at least one of them would disappear before our very eyes, the sad truth was that not a single one was packing the one ring. Wonder how Tolkien's tale would have worked out if Bilbo had made off with Gollum's hotel key instead...

Empire's Hobbit Tolkien Trivia Video Interview
The director and cast of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey could probably find their way around Mirkwood with blindfold on, but do they know their J.R.R. Tolkien from their J.R Ewing? Empire challenged them to dazzle us with their most arcane piece of Tolkien trivia. The responses were surprising...

    Hobbit Spoiler Podcast: Philippa Boyens
Philippa Boyens is the writer and producer behind The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, as well as King Kong, The Lovely Bones, and all three of The Hobbits, working alongside Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh throughout. While she was here in London promoting the first instalment of the Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Boyens stopped by Empire's studio to talk us through some key moments of how they made the film - though as you may have guessed, it's chock full of spoilers, so be sure to listen to this only after you've watched the film...

    The Empire Podcast #41
Pretty much all other big name releases are running scared this week, hiding in their metaphorical trolls' caves as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey stomps into cinemas. So with that in mind, this particular Empire Podcast boasts three interviews with stars from said film, namely Andy Serkis (Gollum), Martin Freeman (BIlbo) and Richard Armitage (Thorin), as well as your regular dose of film-related fun and general movie blather.

    Empire's Special Eric Idle Podcast
Eric Idle, then. Member of Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Rutles and The Unseen University, he's been making people chuckle for years and years, be it on stage, TV screen, cinema, record player or in this instance, the Empire Podcast.

What We Learned From The Pacific Rim Trailer
Guillermo Del Toro takes inspiration from all over - influences on this film range from Godzilla to Goya - to cook up his cinematic feasts. Now that the first Pacific Rim trailer is online, here's a little about the film and what you can expect from its world. Those with a phobia of enormous dangerous things should look away now...

    Empire's Christmas Competition Advent Calendar
We've team up with our pals at HMV to bring you especially festive '24 Days of Christmas' Advent Calendar give-away. Each day will open and give you the opportunity to win an amazing competition prize - which we'll make sure gets to you by Christmas day! Christmas has definately started early, all courtesy of HMV and Empire, of course.

Empire's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Celebration
Thorin Oakenshield's quest to slay Smaug and reclaim Erebor and his birthright, the Arkenstone, is but nothing compare to our quest to assemble all the members of his company, quiz them and write down what they say. Using the ancient software of Wryd, we have delivered the most comprehensive coverage of The Hobbit in existence. Follow on for a dwarves' eye view of the full tale behind Peter Jackson's latest Tolkien epic.

    Empire's James Bond Travel Map
James Bond isn't a man much concerned with his carbon footprint. Whether he's jetting off to the Caribbean, blasting into space or jetpacking his way out of a French Chalet, 007 definitely isn't afraid of clocking up a few airmiles on the job. Here, then, is Empire's map of his adventures, showing you just where everyone's favourite secret agent has gone over the past fifty years, starting with London and, well, you'll find out for yourself...

Hobbit Exclusive: Three Directors Talk Peter Jackson
The honorary 'New Zealand's finest' is a tougher and tougher title to grasp these days, what with Richie McCaw lifting Rugby World Cups and Karl Urban bringing justice to Mega-City One as Judge Dredd. Still, it's safe to say that, with a more-than-illustrious filmography behind him, an entire film industry established, three Hobbit movies striding into view and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sitting in his garage, Peter Jackson won't be relinquishing the unofficial position any time soon. Empire spoke to three contrasting filmmakers, all with a debt to Jackson, about their respect and affection for the director.

The 2012 Movie Menu Of The Year
If Hollywood was a giant chuck wagon dispensing tasty treats, we'd like Anna Kendrick to be behind the counter serving tasty paninis like in What To Expect When You're Expecting. Failing that we'd take Seth Rogen's poultry expert in Take This Waltz or whoever made kebabs for the Avengers. Anyone, basically, apart from Aunty May - bless her - and her meatloaf. Our tip? Try the chicken. Give pudding a miss.

When To Watch Your Favourite Christmas Movies
If you're reading this, you probably quite like Christmas movies. You may even be the kind of person who has done all their Christmas shopping already and wears a reindeer jumper from November onwards. But either way, you have to struggle with a thorny question: when is it OK to watch (or admit to watching) the many Christmas movies out there? When should you programme in Elf, and what's the right time for It's A Wonderful Life? For your convenience, we've assembled a Christmas timetable below...

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

It may deal in part with a (literal) phantom menace, but this is thankfully not The Phantom Menace. The Hobbit plays younger and lighter than Fellowship and its follow-ups, but does right by the faithful and has a strength in Martin Freeman's Bilbo that may yet see this trilogy measure up to the last one. There is treasure here.
