 | This Week... This week, we'll be rubbing shoulders with the great and the good of Hollywood as the British Academy Film Awards take place at London's Royal Opera House. This year, Twitterati Stephen Fry once takes on presenting duties, taking the place of, er, Twitterati supremo Jonathan Ross, who's hosted the last few years - so prepare for loquacious, eloquent and extremely intelligent dick jokes (hooray!). Of course, I say that "we" will be rubbing shoulders: in practice, Chris will be lurking on the red to secure a quick word with the celebrity guests, Nick is going along as a guest, and Yours Truly will be stuck in a ballet room waaaay backstage watching events unfold thanks to an array of camera links a Bond villain would be proud of. Still, between the three of us we'll bring you all the news that's fit to print from an evening that promises to contain more stars than there are on Captain America's underwear. Also on the site this week, we have Daniel Radcliffe talking scares, David Cronenberg talking psychoanalysis and a celebration of 80 years of John Williams - as well as the first instalments of our Oscars coverage. Check it out! Dan Aykroyd Webchat! Come along and pose your questions on Monday February 13 at 4.30pm (GMT). Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Raiding The Lost Ark: A 'Filmumentary' By Jamie Benning Jamie Benning is an outstanding human being. The man behind the fan-made video commentaries for the original Star Wars trilogy - 'Star Wars Begins', 'Building Empire' and 'Returning To Jedi' - he's poured hours, days, weeks, months into collating and cutting together videos that illuminate and educate would-be Jedi knights about the ways of The Force. Well, the ways of the people who made A New Hope, Empire and Jedi, anyway. | | | |

 | | | | | 80 Reasons Why John Williams Is The Man To celebrate John Williams 80th birthday, we have gathered together in no particular order 80 of his greatest cues to showcase the dizzying scope and seemingly unfathomable depths of his genius. You would need 800 tracks (and counting) to do full justice to his talent so please leave your glaring omissions, favourite Williams tunes and birthday salutations in the comments section. | |
| | | Stars Reveal Their Favourite Muppets Tom Cruise. Johnny Depp. Orlando Bloom. Christopher Nolan. We sent up the Kermit-signal and Hollywood responded in droves to answer the most important issue of our age: who is your favourite Muppet? Yes, we dared to pit Kermit against Miss Piggy and Bunsen against Gonzo. Frankly, the answers will surprise and amaze you. Read on to find out which Muppet scares Bradley Cooper, which one makes Orlando Bloom a little weak at the knees, and which one Angela Lansbury most admires, among many others... |
| | | The Woman In Black Interviews If your heebies are currently lacking in jeebie, fear not - or rather, fear lots. The Woman In Black arrives this week to creep us all out, with its story of a young solicitor (Daniel Radcliffe) sent to a dark old house to put the papers there in order. Problem is that the house's former inhabitants are very much out of order. Screenwritten by Jane Goldman and directed by Eden Lake's James Watkins, it's a thoroughly dark affair - so take a peek from between your fingers as we get the lowdown from the filmmakers and star... |
| | | David Cronenberg On A Dangerous Method If the darker recesses of David Cronenberg's mind resemble dim corridors piled high with evil doppelgangers, exploding heads, mind-controlling tellies and buzzing flies, A Dangerous Method was born in a candle-lit alcove. Adapted from Christopher Hampton's play, it's here that some of the psychology behind the director's past psychodramas and horrors is laid bare. The Canadian auteur has pieced together a smart and typically sharp-edged origin story for modern psychology, with Michael Fassbender as psychology Carl Jung and old muse Viggo Mortensen playing the Swiss's cigar-puffing mentor, Sigmund Freud. Empire tracked down Cronenberg and Mortensen on a recent visit to London to talk cigars and psychology. |
| | | Oscar Nominees 2012 Pros And Cons It's that time of year again, as Hollywood's finest find themselves, with alarming regularity, donning outfits that cost more than your house and jewellery worth more than you will earn in a lifetime. But awards season is all building to one supreme event, the Empire Awards Oscars on February 26. Ahead of that milestone, we assess the chances of each nominee in the major categories, and see who's looking good ahead of the big night… Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Picture Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Director |
| | | The Sexiest Characters In Cinema Forget George Clooney, pay no attention to Scarlett Johansson. This is about film characters, not film stars, and we asked you to decide on the most attractive fictional creatures of all time. We probably shouldn't have been surprised at the number of catsuit-wearers who turned up in the results (they just outnumber the bikini or tuxedo lovers) but you may be surprised by a few names here, both for how high (or low) certain heartthrobs place and who makes the cut. Read on to learn more, and even learn a few ace chat-up lines that are GUARANTEED to work if you ever meet these fictional characters... |
| | | The Ultimate Movie Couples Picture Quiz So Valentine's Day is coming up - on the 14th, apparently - and for many, it's a pretty divisive part of the calendar. If you are seeing someone, what can you do that's good enough / not rammed with other couples / genuinely romantic? If you're not seeing someone, what can you do to avoid all the loved-up goons out there? Here at Empire, we have an answer, and it comes in the form of a picture quiz. All you have to do is recognise the couple, work out the film they appear in, then type the name of said film in the box below the picture. Easy. Like love, really. |
| | | A Brief History Of Obvious (And Not So Obvious) Movie Titles There are movies that, like the well-known household sealer, do exactly what they say on the reel. Take Raiders Of The Lost Ark (ingredients: a lost ark, some raiders) and The Battle Of Algiers (and its sequel, 'Clearing Up After The Battle Of Algiers'). Wherever you look there are plenty of others - Three Men And A Baby, Alien Vs. Predator and The Fighter to name just a few. These titles are a marketeer's dream - slap them on a poster and you're ready for the pub. Other films, though... well, let's just say that we spent a long time waiting for the dog in Slumdog Millionaire. And we're still waiting for the bit in Happiness when someone, anyone, cracks a smile. While we're on it, why isn't Sling Blade about a champion knife-thrower? Here's a sliding scale of Ronseal movie titles, from the blindingly obvious to the mystifyingly obscure. |
| | | Empire Meets Bombay Beach's Alma Har'el Award-winning video artist, photographer and music video director Alma Har'el discovered the desolate, American wasteland known as Bombay Beach while filming a music video for frequent collaborators Beirut, and it left such an impression it became the subject of her directorial debut. In the five months she spent filming in the area, Har'el chose three protagonists who'd be the focus of the film and seamlessly blended their stories with her interest in music and dance: Benny Parrish, is a young boy born into a troubled but loving family who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder; CeeJay Thompson, a black teenager and aspiring football player who moved to Bombay Beach to escape the threat of gangs in LA; and Red, a survivor who lives on cigarettes and whiskey. The film has won rave reviews across the globe – including one ringing endorsement from Terry Gilliam – and as it made its UK bow, Empire spoke to her about communities, responsibilities and winning over Bob Dylan. |
