 | This Week... After last week's visit from Nicolas Cage, surely this week would be a come-down. But no! Instead, we had a visit from Viggo Mortensen to talk about his new film, A Dangerous Method. It turns out that the multi-hyphenate actor had loads to tell us, from discussing Freud's mechanical underpants (not even kidding) to telling us the coolest fencing story you'll ever hear. Also this week, we published the results of our Sexiest Movie Characters poll. Given that it includes cat ladies and Gollum, you should all be ashamed of yourselves. We also talked to the filmmakers behind Chronicle and Martha Marcy May Marlene, and spoke to a Chemical Brother about their new film. If that isn't a good start to February, we don't know what is. There are 20 entries in our final shortlist, whittled down from the hundreds originally sent in, and it's your job to watch the lot - they're only a minute each - and vote for your favourite. Are you up to the challenge? We have a sneaky suspicion you are... | |
| | | The 50 Sexiest Characters In Cinema Forget George Clooney, pay no attention to Scarlett Johansson. This is about film characters, not film stars, and we asked you to decide on the most attractive fictional creatures of all time. We probably shouldn't have been surprised at the number of catsuit-wearers who turned up in the results (they just outnumber the bikini or tuxedo lovers) but you may be surprised by a few names here, both for how high (or low) certain heartthrobs place and who makes the cut. Read on to learn more, and even learn a few ace chat-up lines that are GUARANTEED to work if you ever meet these fictional characters... |
| | | Martha Marcy May Marlene Interviews The tongue-twisty Martha Marcy May Marlene is the tale of Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), a young woman who escapes the clutches of a mysterious cult only to find that life on the outside isn't all that safe and reassuring either. Director Sean Durkin's debut will have a similar effect. It's shot through with a creeping sense of paranoia that builds and builds like a pressure cooker, all underpinned by an astonishing feature film bow from Olsen. In another year she's be penciling an Oscars appearance into her diary, although on this evidence it probably won't be long before the Kodak comes calling. Empire caught up with Olsen and her director, as well as Oscar nominee John Hawkes, the cult's charismatic leader Patrick, to talk about their terrific indie. |
| | | Chronicle: The Interviews What would you do if you suddenly discovered you had superpowers? Lift up bigger-than-normal boxes? Fly to work? Tidy your bedroom with your mind? This, according to new sci-fi Chronicle, is where we'd be going wrong. In his terrific found-footage flick, the discovery of mysteriously bestowed telekinesis is a poisoned chalice perched next to a two-edged sword packed inside a big box marked "holy shit!". Unsurprisingly, for the three high-schoolers at its heart, Matt, Andrew and Steve, with great power comes great irresponsibility. What happens next should be seen on the biggest screen possible. Empire met up with the actors who play the super-trio and director Josh Trank, a man with a big future, to talk about bringing their fresh found-footage movie to the screen. |
| | | Introducing Josh Trank The latest in Empire's series of 'Directors Who Are About To Be Everywhere' is Josh Trank, the Californian-born filmmaker behind new found-footage sci-fi Chronicle. With his dark spin on the teen movie he's melded the spirit of Carrie, Akira and Breakfast Club to create a whole new spin on the superhero movie. So where those conscious influences on Trank's film, and what were his earliest memories of going to the cinema? Using only telekinesis and a good map, we tracked him down to find out. |
| | | Empire's City Guide: Philadelphia Rocky was unleashed on US audiences 35 years ago this month, prompting the city's commerce director to say the film had "done more for the city's image than anyone since Ben Franklin". But America's first capital is often overlooked by directors as a setting, routinely used as a 'New York' location by filmmakers taking advantage of Philadelphia's similar architecture and generous tax credits. Here we pay tribute to ten films – good and bad - that make a main feature of the city of liberty, independence and brotherly love. |
| | | Exclusive Viggo Mortensen Webchat Viggo Mortensen plays Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method - out February 10 - starring alongside Michael Fassbender's Carl Jung and Keira Knightley's Sabina Spielrein. While he was out and about in London town recently, our man Mortensen came round the Empire offices to talk about playing the founding father of psychoanalysis, as well as other topics, such as mechanised underwear, professional photography and Carlito's Way - and here is the resulting webchat transcript. |
| | | Empire Meets A Chemical Brother Two blokes pushing buttons and adjusting dials doesn't sound like the stuff of raucous Friday-night entertainment. Yet that's exactly what the Chemical Brothers and director Adam Smith have created with Don't Think, a super-charged concert film that mixes footage of the Brothers' headline set at Japan's Fuji Rock festival with uber-trippy visuals. Empire headed down to the Hackney premiere to talk to Ed Chemical (aka Ed Simons) and Smith, but first witnessed a packed auditorium, including guests Keira Knightley, Matt Smith and Fatboy Slim, get to their feet and dance through the final reel of the film... |
| | | Free Screening: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Oscar Nominated "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" starring Academy Award winners Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock is in cinemas everywhere from 17th February. Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" tells the story from inside the young mind of Oskar Schell an inventive eleven year-old New Yorker. To celebrate the release, we are giving you the chance to see the film for first and for free at a cinema near you! | | | |

 |
 | | | | | Carnage A quartet of pitch-perfect performances from a cast uniformly at its career best, together with a director on shockingly mischievous top form, this is a shot of pure, exhilarating cinematic malice. And if nothing else, it contains the most surprising puking sequence since Monsieur Creosote. | | | | Also Out | | | This week's video trailers and clips.
